The suggestion is frankly laughable but someone is reading into the YYC expansion a little too deeply.
The rumours are true, however they also lack a serious dose of context.

YEG and YWG we're getting their terminals redevelopment and expanded at about the same time. The U.S. govt is notorious for threatening to leave if they don't get exactly what they want. In the case of yeg and YWG , USCBP demand was for pax flow to be checkin -> security -> USCBP -> retail and holdrooms , essentially put security before USCBP. This demand meant airport authorities had to come up with a solution that did not entail preboard screening both before and after USCBP (first time to meet USCBP demands, second time to ensure that liquids and other checked bag only articles are not in the carry on bags.) in YEG case this lead to extra cost of implementin the picture taking approach currently used for checked bags.

The USCBP "meet our demand or we leave" negotiating tactic was employed as far back as YVR international terminal in early 90s. At that time, USCBP objected to the use of swing gates between international and transborder areas. all doors had to bolted shut and only USCBP could would have the keys to open.

Another interesting tidbit, taffy do you remember the old yeg terminal departures drop off area where USCBP got to park their cars at the end of the second level. That was another meet our demands or we leave.at yyc, USCBP have reserved parking on the same level as rental cars for the same reason.

GTAA has been negotiating for years with USCBP as they contemplate moving security before primary inspection line. The renovations will have to be done very quickly as yyz t1 and t3 will have to continue operations while renos are being completed.

777 to FRA ends on Tuesday, but then it's coming back in March only to be replaced by 333 again at the end of March. Right now the sked is showing the inbound from FRA as a 77L and outbound back to FRA as a 333 which is weird... so either that will change and the swap will happen at FRA, or a 333 is coming to YYC from somewhere and then a 77L will be leaving for YYZ or something on Tuesday night, so watch for that.

As conveyed to me originally YEG and YWG also had no year-round US destinations that lacked full CBP.

Delta increasing YYC-SEA to 4 daily for the summer scheds.

An early morning departure being added @ 0615.

DL's summer operations @ YYC increases to 8 daily.

A nice little bit of news on the transborder front, I wonder how Alaska/Horizon have been doing on the SEA run since Delta entered the market?

Awesome news! Hopefully DL (OO) & AS (QX) can co-exist harmoniously on this route. With 8X daily (4X DL/OO + 3X AS/QX + 1X AC/QK), will that put SEA into the #1 position for TB frequency this summer?

Granted, they all operate small planes but I'd think our ranking should go up in this table:

I flew one of the new DL flights in November.
Very nice flight - short, sweet and comfy.

Make that 9 daily! AC has 2 flights per day during the summer. So SEA will become the #1 transborder route for frequencies.

I fear the end result of the DL invasion will be AS/QX dropping to 2x frequency, or worse.

Just checked SEA's pax numbers, wow the airports in US are way bigger than Cdn. And if only Calgary could an abbreviation like Seattle does, thinking CGY instead of YYC. Prob be too simple/common sense though lol.

I predict that AS/QX will quietly pull out of YYC, espcecially if DL goes onto SEA-YEG.

The interesting side is that DL could make a play to get AS services to canada to be unprofitable. With the recent DL expansions into yyc and YVR it's certainly possible that AS might leave Canada all together. Thai would pull out of YYJ and YLW and free up a gate at the coveted south satellite at SEA.

I think that by early summer we will see AS at 2 daily and then they will pull out all together come the winter 15/16 schedule.

AS pulls out of the market at the first sign of poor performance, one of the major reasons DL is making a play for SEA. AS pulled out of yvr and pulled down frequencies when WS got into the transborder. AS has also publicly stated they will not enter into turf wars for market share. DL is willing to spend the short term bucks to get Longterm big $$$$.

Another hidden casualty will be WS encore service on YYC-SEA.taking DL out of the picture and WS Encore would have entered the market. But it's not likely now.

BA timetable shows 787 back at YYC after Oct 24th 2015. Can this change? On another news item BA said they will be retiring most of its longhaul 767s by end of 2015.

Man! If Thai flew to YYJ I would have definitely tried that route before

It's just a matter of time before it goes back to a 787 mainly for the reason you mention.
Can this change? Think about how many times this route has already flip flopped back and forth between the 763 and the 788.

I too would assume the reason we'd see the BA 788 back is because their 763's will be all gone at some point. That's if BA sticks around, this could be an interesting year on that front.

US cities are much bigger than Canadian cities, mind you.

Seattle metro: 3.6 million
SEA pax: 35 million

Calgary metro: 1.2 million
Calgary pax: 14 million

So in fact, YYC beats SEA, per capita... if that was your concern.

Canada's codes come from way back in the days of the railroad, though I've also heard the prefix Y means a weather station was co-located with an aerodrome. Either way, an IATA code toss-up at this point would be a nightmare.
