Grillades Torino is a food court restaurant. The third restaurant was supposed to be a Zibo but finally it will be a La Belle et la Bœuf.

Target's Starbucks outlets closing

Shoppers looking for bargains at the upcoming Target liquidation sales will need to get their caffeine fix beforehand — Target is closing its Starbucks outlets for good on Friday.

The shutdown of Starbucks at all Canadian Targets was confirmed Thursday by Eric Hausman, a Target spokesman in Minneapolis.

“Generally speaking, the team members will be re-assigned to other areas of the store,” Hausman said in an email to the Citizen.

Target has five stores in Ottawa and 133 nationwide. The company announced earlier this month it was pulling out of Canada. A liquidation sale is expected to begin in the next two to three weeks.

The Starbucks in the stores are operated as franchises by Target Canada.

Meanwhile, Starbucks is holding open houses and giving Target employees priority as it interviews for some of the 8,000 jobs it expects to fill this year, said Starbucks spokeswoman Carly Suppa. It hopes to find jobs for some of them at adjacent Starbucks.

The company is also “working to find ways to bring Starbucks back to those communities and to those customers,” Suppa said.

How about Simons? They are on a major expansion and maybe 3 is too much for Ottawa but Bayshore demographics would be perfect fit Simons. In addition, Quebec City has 3 with a much smaller population. Just a taught.

Ottawa Target stores might be 'dark for a while': Retail expert

Nobody seems to have Target in their sights.

This is the dim prediction of business analyst Field Agent, which has looked at all five Ottawa locations of the department store chain and determined there is no obvious replacement tenant.

“Ottawa is already saturated,” said Field Agent general manager Jeff Doucette. “I think there’s going to be some dark buildings for a while.”

With Target’s pending withdrawal from the Canadian marketplace, there are 133 large retail spaces coming onto the market starting later in 2015.

Field Agent analyzed each location and measured the distance from those locations to the closest outlet of a potential chain that might be a candidate to move in — namely Wal-Mart, Costco, Canadian Tire, Lowes and Loblaws’ stable of retail outlets.

In Ottawa, these companies already have stores too close to be considered viable options to move in to the Target stores. The Ottawa Target locations are Place d’Orleans, Billings Bridge, a plaza at 1055 St. Laurent Blvd. near Donald St., a strip mall at 1585 Merivale Rd. and the Hazeldean Mall.

“From our analysis is it pretty clear that there will not be a white knight,” Doucette said.

The Ottawa stores average 100,000 square feet.

Ottawa-headquartered discount store Giant Tiger has expressed an interest, but only to use portions of the empty stores.

Goodlife Fitness announced last week it, too, will look at some as part of its growth strategy.

Another purchaser could include TJX Companies, which owns Winners, HomeSense, TJ Maxx and Marshall’s — but those stores average 30,000 square feet in size.

Sprott School of Business professor Ian Lee said he’ll “bet all my money” that no one chain will step up and fill the void.

“There will be a few here, a few there -- they’ll chop some up and subdivide. There will be clothing stores, grocery stores, big box stores and discount stores. It won’t be one or two or even five. A year from now it will all be done and the stores will be reabsorbed into the market.”

Doucette believes mall locations like Bayshore may be the most difficult to fill.

“They’re going to have to look beyond the obvious,” he said.

Bayshore general manager Denis Pelletier wouldn’t comment or speculate on what the future holds, as they’re not in control of the space until the court process is complete.

It seems that Sears might be interested in a few locations based on the following quote from an OBJ article :

Target's exit from Canada leaves 133 retail locations vacant across the country, but Sears Canada isn't chasing many of them, since the "vast majority" are near an existing Sears store, Mr. Boire said.

"A handful of them have been brought to my attention where we may have opportunity ... but we're not making any official inquiries at this point," he said.

The retail trade really took a beating from Wal-mart, but Amazon and other e-tailers are killing the high mark-up items.

For example, I have a friend who got fit for an expensive brassiere. Paid the $150 price for one then scoops a half-dozen or so off the Internet at a quarter of that price.

How can any bricks-and-mortar store compete with that?

I don't think you will find that kind of bargain very often. And then there are the semi-hidden costs of shipping and exchange if the item is sourced in the United States.

I am not a fan of buying clothing over the Internet when we all know that sizing is not precise.

It will be a sad day if Wal-Mart becomes much more dominant in the retail trade. I hate the place. Tremendous breadth of merchandise but generally limited selection on any particular item and mostly lower quality brands.

I try to stay loyal to my local stores, specifically ones providing specialty items (local bike shop, running store and outdoors store). I sometimes pay a slight premium over buying elsewhere and sometimes they don't carry an item I want (MEC is often a useful backup in that case), but I actually manage to get quite a few discounts in the end. The outdoor store's loyalty program effectively means that I get 10% off everything, and both the LBS and running store I use give a 20% discount to members of the group I train with. The loyalty can pay off too; once you are a familiar face, they are far more likely to go above and beyond to help you out.

I'm like that, I generally stick to local businesses for most things. Yes, they're pricier, but I find the customer service is much better, and they'll help you out without trying to rip you off (unlike Future Shop!).

There's a human face to these businesses that I like that big chain retailers simply don't have.

Went there Wednesday. Looks like a bigger, cleaner Zellers.

Think that was another problem; those who didn't like Zellers never went because they associated Target to the brand and those who liked Zellers (like myself) never went because we associated Target with Zellers' death.

The decision marks a small step in the liquidation of Target Canada, which made its insolvency filing in January after determining it would take years to turn a profit.

However, there are still several hurdles to overcome.

Court filings made earlier this week show that Target Canada ended an agreement with a property company it established for its real estate assets, and it now claims to be owed $1.9 billion, which makes it the largest creditor in the proceedings.

Suppliers dispute Target's move, saying it could eat up all the $400 million they claim to be owned in the insolvency.

"This has to be a very full, transparent process not run by Target Canada," said Justice Geoffrey Morawetz of Ontario Superior Court .

He added that "creditors have to be satisfied" that claims made by Target's former property company have gone through a vetting process.

In January, Target filed for creditor protection and abruptly announced that it was closing down all 133 of its stores in Canada because it would be unable to make a profit for at least five years.

The Smith Falls one is set to close today.

The one in Gatineau will be closed on April 1st. The Citizen article I've posted in the Retail Thread - when mentionning the closure of both Target and Staples in Smiths Falls - says all stores in the region will be closed by April 4th

I hope the person in Smiths Falls who successfully prevented the plastics factory from setting up is happy now. Target closing today, and Staples also closing this weekend. That's the last town I'd want to live in anywhere in Canada right now if I needed work.
