You are correct!

I think that if Canadian Tire is to build again in Saskatoon, they might wait for the land across from Wilson's Greenhouse to be ready.

Is there another American company that may want to take a stab at the Canadian market? JC Penny? Marshalls? Bring back Kmart!?

There's also the possibility of an IKEA, which plans to open a string of 10 smaller stores across Canada in 2015. The stores will be similar in size to a London Drugs at about 37,000 sq ft, or about 1/10th the size of a standard IKEA. They'll function primarily as pick-up outlets for those who have shopped online.

Building The Banks

Developer takes on urban renewal in Riversdale

By Joanne Paulson, Saskatoon Express
Issue: Week of Jan 19, 2015

Chris Le Fevre could be described as a bit of a contrarian, and he’s not likely to be offended by the term.

For example, he strongly disputes the commonly held view that successful real-estate investing is all about location, location, location.

“I never agree to that. I always feel it’s timing,” said Le Fevre in a recent interview. “You can have bad luck if your timing isn’t right. I think my timing, fortunately, was right. But that having been said, I’m not finished the project yet; it won’t be finished until the spring of 2016.”

He is talking about The Banks, the four-building residential and small-space commercial project presently rising next to the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market in Riversdale. The buildings’ names reflect their water-side environment: The Riverbend, The Edgewater, The Current and The Bridge. They comprise 134 residential units and 20,000 square feet of commercial space.

As of mid-January, $30 million worth of apartments have been pre-sold — without spending a dime on advertising, Le Fevre notes with some pride. That, above all, tells him his timing is right.

CBC has just reported that Saskatchewan is "not on the list" of the locations for the IKEA expansion.

Intriguing to say the least.

Saskatchewan has a workforce that boasts among the highest levels of weekly earnings in the country. You'd think we'd be on the radar.

Yes Saskatchewan has the second highest earnings per worker and second highest GDP per capita. Also consumer spending has beenincreasing by 5+% per year for a long time.

I know a lot of people would cheer at this option, but feels like a cash grab by Ikea, knowing how much markets like Saskatoon(Saskatchewan) want an Ikea. Go big or go home!!!

My read on this is that these smaller locations will actually be set up in close proximity to the existing Ikea stores. So for instance they'd have a location set up in downtown Toronto or Vancouver so people there wouldn't have to haul their Ikea purchases home from the burbs, they could just order online and pick it up closer to their condo. Tailoring the experience to people who may not have cars due to their lifestyle but still want access to the products. Us poor schmuks out here in the sticks are willing do drive the 8 hours to shop for put together yourself furniture, there isn't as much incentive to put up a store here when we are used to going out of our way to get things.

I commented on this in the Regina thread: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showpost.php?p=6883999&postcount=2211

But what do they do once they've picked up their order several blocks from home on foot... carry it? Works for the small stuff Ikea sells but not furniture.

Clearly, they need to set up the mini-Ikea stores on every corner in Toronto, right beside the Starbucks. And while they are at it they could install bum wiping machines at each store for the good folks of urban Toronto.

This report says that Sask is still being considered

Sask. being considered for smaller Ikea 'pick up' location

Company confirms smaller stores in the works for across Canada

Reported by Trelle Kolojay, NewsTalk 650 CKOM
First Posted: Jan 21, 2015 2:10pm | Last Updated: Jan 21, 2015 2:27pm

There's still hope for Ikea fans in Saskatchewan.

The Swedish furniture giant has plans to open as many as 10 smaller "pick up" locations across Canada.

There is no official word yet on where those will be, but Madeleine Löwenborg-Frick, public relations manager for Ikea Canada, said they haven't ruled Saskatchewan out for one of those stores.

Wasn't that kinda Arts' point? It doesn't seem to make sense to set up these pick-up depots for a furniture store in highly urban locations when these urban dwellers will just have it delivered to their door anyway.

Sadly Ikea said there are no plans to build in Saskatchewan. Makes zero sense.

As per the NewsTalk story above, there are currently conflicting reports on that.

City's new operations centre millions under budget: officials

BY ANDREA HILL, THE STARPHOENIX JANUARY 21, 2015

Quote:
The City of Saskatoon says the contract for its new civic operations centre is $25 million under budget.

The city had budgeted $185 million for building construction and 25 years of operation and maintenance. The project is now pegged at $160 million. Almost a quarter of the costs — $38.5 million — will be paid by the federal government through a public-private-partnership (P3) grant. This is Saskatoon’s first P3 project.

Under the P3 agreement, the project cannot go over budget. Unbudgeted costs over $160 million are the responsibility of Integrated Team Solutions, the company that won the contract to build and maintain the centre for 25 years.

Mayor Don Atchison on Wednesday said the savings will free up money for the city to invest sooner in a number of other projects, including interchanges, hockey arenas and track facilities.

“The list goes on and on of infrastructure projects,” Atchison said.

Phase 1 of the centre is scheduled to include a new Saskatoon Transit operations facility, which will relocate the bus barns from Caswell Hill, along with the city’s first permanent snow management facility. The future of the bus barns has not yet been determined.

Council last fall approved the choice of Integrated Team Solutions (ITS) for the construction component. The ITS consortium is comprised of EllisDon Capital Inc., Fengate Capital, Kasian Architecture, EllisDon Corporation and Cofely Services Inc.

EllisDon has won several contracts for major municipal projects in recent years, including the new Saskatoon police headquarters and the Remai Modern art gallery and parkade, which are slated for completion in 2016.

So when does Saskatoon get a "Bed Bath and Beyond", since Regina has had one for about a year already.

That store carries a lot of cool things.

Marshalls right beside it is pretty decent for a Winners-type store too.

Saskatoon seems to lag behind Regina on the retail train.

Really? You're saying this based on two stores?

Guess, Dynamite, Town Shoes, Banana Republic Factory Store, Victoria's Secret (soon), Lush, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, American Apparel, Michael Hill Jewelers - all in Saskatoon, not Regina. We had a Sephora for a couple years before Regina did. We were also the only Mexx location in the province.

Regina gets the big box retailers like Lowes before Saskatoon, typically, but we get the the fashion and other mall retailers. Way more fashion choices here than in Regina. More on the way, from what I've heard.

Regina has a Town Shoes, but I would agree with you that the clothing options in Saskatoon are better than Regina, however, Regina's options are also growing. And did Mexx not go bankrupt?
