I went through the archives.

We actually do have some census-related documents that survive.

In 1891, they did a census of the two electoral districts that comprise St. John's.

Both combined were far smaller than our current CMA and list each separate municipality included in the total.

The total for both is:

36,027

To get just the city, I've chosen to combine only those areas that were (as I understand it) then connected to the city by unbroken development.

So:

St. John's East

St. John's from Beck's Cove East: 15,347
Quidi Vidi: 187
Portugal Cove: 1,021

Total: 16,555

Leaving out: Logy Bay, Outer Cove, Middle Cove, Torbay, Flatrock, Pouch Cove, Cape St. Francis, Bauline, and Bell Island.

St. John's West

St. John's from Beck's Cove West: 13,660
Blackhead: 92
Maddox Cove: 100
Petty Harbour: 953

Total: 14,805

Leaving out: Broad Cove

So grand total for JUST the city in 1891 is:

31,360

*****

One other cute thing. In 1891, the total responses for birthplace:

Newfoundland: 195,472
England: 1,789
Ireland: 1,221
Scotland: 388
Other British Colonies (Bermuda, etc.): 1,210
Foreign States: 2,623
Indians: 143

Awesome Toronto shots. It's downtown was grandiose even back then. Even more so than Montreal's, like in this image - you can't find that scene in Montreal, we just don't have a half dozen+ pre-war high-rises next to each other. We may have had more high roses in total, but ours were spread out and shorter.

Going through an old British geography book from 1915 - The Dominions of Canada and Newfoundland.

It has some cute pictures and passages!

Wow Hamilton had an east end airport? Never knew that. I recognize Stelco and the QEW but can't recognize any of the inner city.

Very interesting collection. The photo must be from before 1901 because that's the site of the courthouse and it's not there.

Note the huge jump in almost all western Canadian cities during this time. All except Victoria.

Different architect but same person managing the projects. WFC is a Pelli design built by Olympia and York. BH is Cohos Evamy, developed by Trizec. I went to high school with a girl who's father was the project manager on both, as well as Edmonton Centre, TD Square in Calgary in Calgary and BCE Place in Toronto. He had models of all four in his house.

I'm not sure any of the inner city is present.

It's crazy seeing people crossing the tracks like that. Seems to me that this is forbidden at most stations nowadays.

On an interesting note, CN and CP still staff the AMT trains.

^The two hotel vancouvers. Such a shame they tore down the second one, and also the Georgia medical building. That square would have been the nicest in the country, or on the same level as Place d'Armes. Really, I can't believe they tore down the second hotel vancouver.
