Lots of empty stores on the 3rd floor and with Target and Sony vacating their spaces, it will be a tough sled for Bayshore moving forward. Mexx is liquidating their stuff and will be out soon.

Hope they find the right tenants who will stick around for a while. Btw, the parking is still a giant pain in the behind!

Oh no, they're still working on the western-most section that parallels Woodridge Crescent. I presume that they will then turn the corner and do the end section that is immediately outside The Bay. It's going to be a while yet...

Okay let's see what can fill up that space.

A grocery store? They had a long history of failures in that (in fact they have troubles keeping dollar stores, but a Dollarama could part of the void. Costco would be too big I think for the mall and with the parking problems they are notorious of, I doubt it would happen (and also it would be less 10 minutes from the Kanata location and also the future Barrhaven location). A T&T store perhaps?

Wal-Mart? Probably no for same reasons as Costco.

A retailer like Simons or Nordstrom? Maybe

A movie theatre? No since there is the Coloseum nearby.

Or just simply no anchor tenants and put up an additionnal batch of new stores

Or probably like Place d'Orleans put up some office space.

Or as wishful thinking, maybe a return of Zellers.

Best Buy or Futureshop? Or they could move the Winners/HomeSense to that end and put the electronics store in the middle. Best Buy doesn't have a mall store in the city like they do in the US, and with the Apple Store present, it already has a good common customer base.

I thought Best Buy (at least the one in the States) is already struggling themselves with more people buying online or researching online then going to the B&M Best Buy to price-match? Plus there is already one in Kanata Centrum and one on Merivale (same with Future Shop)...not sure if the population is big enough to support 3 of these guys in the West end.

Ivanhoe (Bayshore mall owner) certainly has their work cut out for them and I don't envy their current position. We lived in Bayshore for 10 years after immigrating here and the Mall always has a soft spot in my heart. I still remember going to Les Ailes and Zellers like yesterday. Hope they rebound and yes a grocery store would do wonders here, something along the line of Food Basics/FreshCo/No Frills.

Maybe, but they are trying to go upmarket to compete (somewhat) with Rideau, so a Metro or Superstore might be more in line with their targets (no pun intended).

Sears or JC Penney. In other words, I can't see them finding a niche if Sears is struggling.

He doesn’t expect new retail entrants to try to swoop in. U.S. discounter Kohl’s Corp., for instance, has studied the Canadian market but not shown interest recently, industry sources have said.

Is Kohl's similar to Target or the Bay?

I've been to the States several times but don't recall ever going to a Kohl's

Like jeremy_haak said, Sears and JC Penney. Lower-middle class department store.

I love Kohls and I hate Sears... I don't think they are the same at all. I've bought a lot of clothes at Kohls. Unfortunately I was just looking at the numbers and Kohl's probably won't be around for much longer, so I doubt the long rumored Canadian expansion is going to happen.

I also posted this in the Target forum. How about Simons, they are on a major expansion and maybe 3 is too much for Ottawa but Bayshore demographics would be perfect fit for Simons and Bayshore with their up market. In addition, Quebec City has 3 with a much smaller population. Just a taught.

I used to work in Minneapolis and I found Kohl's to be more youthful than that other department stores, with funkier clothes.

Was there this evening, and man, lots of closures. Jacob has closed, Mexx is clearing out everything, Sony will be gone soon, and Target never had a chance. Many of the stores on the third floor are undergoing renos and are closed off -- pretty sleepy up there.

The parking garage was thankfully not as busy as the last time I was there (Novemberish?), but I still saw two cars of people asking the attendant for directions out of the structure. Very few incentives for me to bother visiting Bayshore these days.

It might be a case of the expansions being done at a bad time, even if it wasn't entirely its fault. But they need a new anchor in the Target space badly...
