Einstein Brothers is featured in the renderings of the finished new building, though.

It looked like it was still open a couple days ago. There are quite a few vacant spaces nearby, though, so they might end up moving somewhere before the project gets started.

In other news: the section of Andrew Young that cuts through Centennial Olympic Park is being permanently closed on Feb 9, so I would expect some park updates coming shortly thereafter.
Yeah, it does kinda get lost in the ever growing urban canopy that is Midtown. But we'll be seeing more and more of that as Midtown continues the densify.

Tech-focussed company eyes Midtown Atlanta for 100K square feet

Quote:
An unidentified company has expressed interest in taking up to 100,000 square feet to co-anchor a more than 600,000 square foot mixed-used development planned in the heart of Georgia Tech.
The development, which will include a high performance computing data center and retail complex, is part of the expansion of Georgia Tech's Technology Square — an eight-block development bustling with startups, corporate innovation centers, technology incubators and venture capital firms.

The smaller WalMart grocery stores are actually really nice. Even the WalMArt corner style store in Tech Square is pretty cool.

If the choices are no grocery store downtown or a sWalmart grocery store, I'll take the Walmart grocery store everyday and ten times on Sunday. It's a start. Given the momentum Intown right now, I suspect it won't be long before there are other grocers looking to move downtown.

Having any sort of Wal-Mart in downtown will ultimately be bad for the community in the long run and is akin to selling your sole to the Devil for a short term benefit. I would rather the city offer tax abatements or flat out grants to a national grocer willing to invest in the community.

Mercedes is already looking in GA now to develop a van manufacturing facility, not long after they announced their move to Metro ATL.

There are already three in the Midtown/Downtown area, so consider our souls sold.

While I have no love for Walmart and avoid them, it is an indicator that the business world sees an area as ripe for commercial stores. So I view it as a hopeful sign that other shops will follow. Ultimately what will make the midtown area more walkable is the existence of small shops along the street that cater to the goods and services that residents and hotel guests need on a daily basis (groceries, cleaning, hardware, pharmacies...). What is great about places like Paris, Berlin etc is that if you are staying in a hotel with a minibar coke that is $5, you can walk a few yards down the street and buy it for $1.50 (probably this is why minibars have disappeared in most big city hotels!).

I know a lot of folks take issue with Walmart's marketing and personnel practices, and I'm not a big fan of that myself.

But honestly their grocery sections are pretty darn good. They can also do good looking urban stores if they want to.

Walmart doesn't have the "cool" factor of something like Chelsea market but it could be a strong starting point for downtown. As the residential community grows, they will also need places to buy plastic goods, school supplies and electronics just like folks in the burbs.

Isn't it funny (or sad) that we are acting as if a grocery store were some kind of exotic species?

Asked if he would be putting a Wal-Mart in Underground, Smith said he expected that there would be higher-end retail in the development. - See more at: http://saportareport.com/blog/2014/12/un...-succeed-where-others-have-failed/#.dpuf

I do not want to minimize the plethora of apartment and highrise proposals. Nor do I want to minimize the numerous of projects currently under construction in to Midtown District....

but this......

The Atlanta Business Chronicle is reporting that the project is bringing up to 3,500 to 4,000 jobs into the city.

The new campus will be located at Centergy North at Technology Square on Spring Street, and will provide NCR with a state-of-the-art presence close to Atlanta’s rich innovation centers and leading academic institutions. In addition to helping the company consolidate a number of disparate facilities into unified and contemporary work environments, improved access to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport will make it easier for financial services, retail and hospitality customers from all over the world to visit Atlanta and experience NCR’s innovative technology solutions first hand.

“Creating a state-of-the-art campus in midtown Atlanta near Georgia Tech marks an important step in NCR’s reinvention as an exciting and important, global technology company,” said NCR Chairman and CEO Bill Nuti. “You can count on your hand the number of successful technology company reinventions that have been executed over the last hundred years – and NCR is amongst them. NCR runs global commerce and we make the everyday easier as consumers connect, interact and transact with business. We are extremely proud of the important innovations we create and the valuable work done on behalf of our customers around the world right here in metro Atlanta.”

The new campus in midtown Atlanta will be ready late in 2017 or early in 2018.

and this....

These are two MAJOR announcements. Now there will be 5000+ people who can fill all of these highrise apartment buildings going up in the city.

So a Target supermarket? I don't see Publix or any grocer ranked higher being the first to locate there. I don't see Kroger bringing their Harris Teeter. You definitely don't want to overshoot the market.

What makes you say that? Publix is the only major grocer that has any truly urban locations here, and they even stayed in Atlantic Station during its "Underground" years (and it paid off, because that store is always crowded now... they must be raking it in). Nothing in history makes me think they're not a possibility.
