They don't all look like that at all, in fact they all look very different from location to location. The Park Royal one looks a lot like Galeries d'Anjou...

...but each looks totally unique and most look great and a far cry from the typical box. Perhaps let's wait until it's complete to judge. Simons is known for it's innovation both in store design and merchandise.

Maybe because it seems Park Royal doesn't know what it's doing from one year to the next.

They recently did a re-clad on the north side of the Extra Foods building they just torn down to make it more pedestrian friendly and tie in with The Village. The Food Court they're ripping out is 7 years old, and the far end of the South Mall, past Zara, was just done a few years ago and doesn't match any of the new stuff.

I've been saying for years that Ikea should do this. Let these stores showroom condo-sized and compact living lines, plus be a pick-up store. The stroke of genius would be to include an Ikea cafe as well.

Target is pulling out of Canada, what implications will it have for places like Coquitlam Centre, Lansdowne and other Metro Vancouver shopping centres? Suddenly many centres are faced with the loss of a prime anchor.

Shocking. This has to be one of the bigger failures in Canadian retail history. As recently as yesterday I saw management job postings.

I wonder if they came in too fast and too strong, full of confidence with no backup plan... a few stores in key markets might have helped them adjust.

Metrotown = See above

Surrey Central = Office Space, a bank (Westminster Savings is not in that area), an H-Mart, another upscale Asian restaurant, a Thrifty's or Whole Foods?

Coincided with events in the U.S as well, lower sales, massive security breach.

For sure the biggest failure in Canadian retail history, not even 2 years up and running, the most recent, but so much smaller, was Sears' failed attempt at the 7 high end eatons experiment which lasted barely 2 years.

I wonder if we could see a re-launch of the Zellers banner in a few locations?

I don't know the way international accounting works, but could they not continue to use their Canadian losses to save taxes?

Yes HBC could certainly look to pick up their old assets for pennies on the dollar. I would think they should try an "HBC-rack" style store. The Marshalls/TJMaxx/Winners group is doing well IIRC.

Walmart could expand too.

Props to Target for providing 16 weeks severance.

Regarding Nordstrom, if there's no room for another lower-cost department store, I can't imagine there's room for a high end one...

Not surprised about Target closing at all. Low stocks, non-competitive for-sale items (unlike in U.S. stores), large lease spaces in expensive rental markets (big Canadian cities), and losing a billion bucks. No way they can still continue in Canada.

Sad to see them leave as I get to like the design of their stores (they even landscape their surroundings: Metrotown), neatness and cleanliness.

I suspect after Mexx, Target and Sony closures, the following retailers will also shut down:
- Le Chateau
- Vision Electronics
- Best Buy & Futureshop
- NCIX

With a Walmart and a WM Supercentre already at Lougheed Mall and Dominion Crossing on the Poco side of Pitt River, I really do not see the reason for a third one in the Tri-Cities area.

Uniqlo Clone Simon's, however, is a possibility. It makes the northern end of Coquitlam Centre a livelier spot to hang out, as Target is imo "cheapening" that section of the mall.

-Victoria's Secret
-Topshop and Topman via Hudson's Bay
-Urban Outfitters
-Anthropology
-J. Crew
-Express
-Marshalls
-Sephora
-Simons nationwide expansion
-more of ZARA's ( Inditex ) brands such as Zara Home and Massimo Dutti
...any many luxury brands

Coming Soon : ( or already in some cities )
-Uniqlo
-MUJI
-Desigual
-Nordstrom

I'm sure I've forgotten some but we're clearly at a 'net gain' for retail banners in Canada.
