Look ahead: Rogers Place construction for 2015
The super-fast pace will continue through 2015, with many exciting milestones to look forward to:
Steel structure
Work on the steel structure started in September 2014, and you can clearly see the first tier surrounding what will be the ice surface. Construction of the second and third tiers of the steel structure will be done by fall 2015.
Winter Garden pedway
The steel base for the Winter Garden is visible just south of 104 Ave, and crews have started building the pedway linking Rogers Place arena to the future plaza. The pedway structure will be done in the summer and will span over 104 Avenue.
Steel and glass exterior
Within a few months, the steel and glass exterior will start to go on Rogers Place. As it takes shape, the designs in the steel will show how the form of the building was inspired by Edmonton’s snow drifts. The steel and glass exterior is slated to be done by late 2015.
Public art announcements
Over the next year, the Edmonton Arts Council will be announcing the successful artists who will contribute pieces to Rogers Place, as per the City of Edmonton’s Percent for Art policy.
Anthony At Your Service delivering bulletins
Delivering more than news
Delivering bulletins to area residents is an ordinary task for a construction project, but for Rogers Place, it is accomplishing something a little extraordinary.
One of the goals of Rogers Place is to open up employment opportunities for people who have difficulty finding a job. That’s why the project team hired Anthony at Your Service to deliver bulletins to the residents of Square 104, an apartment building just west of the Rogers Place construction site.
Anthony at Your Service is a small pick-up and delivery business that started because Anthony, who has autism, wanted meaningful work but found it challenging to get a job. The business has grown and now employs a number of individuals who, similar to Anthony, needed help finding a job.
Anthony isn’t very talkative, but his mom Deborah Barrett said this opportunity means a lot. “We really appreciate what you are doing for us. The crews really enjoy this job,” says Deborah.
“Communicating with residents of Square 104 is a very important, and it’s great we’re able to do this and help our community at the same time,” says Rick Daviss, the City of Edmonton’s lead on the Rogers Place team. “Anthony and his coworkers do a great job, and we’re thrilled to have them be a part of this project. It’s another way Rogers Place is already giving back to our community. ”
