The Bowie looks so slim and sexy from certain angles, but then so wide and bulky from others...don't know how I feel about that.

There is just no escaping that humongous parking podium at the bottom of The Bowie. I don't think there is any way to disguise it, and it makes the building look kind of absurd. I would like to see some lighting on this western side of the building. That would make it more interesting at night.

I had really high hopes for this one. The renderings of it made it look super sleek, but it's anything but that. I don't know. It's just awkward. It almost has a utilitarian/industrial look to it. And I don't think it's waterfront worthy either. I think it would be better suited as a filler building a few blocks farther north and east.

It is great from the southern angle, but absolutely awful when looking at it from the north. Thankfully there'll be infill in the lots to the north of it to blunt some of it's visual impact when looking at it from the north.

As a San Antonio resident (spent 4 good years in Austin from 99-03), let me just say that I playfully resent all of you. Spoiled - every last one of you.

If you're not happy with this bulky 400' residential building (that looks ugly from the north), just send it down I-35...we'd be thrilled to have a tower crane put something up other than a bigger convention center.

In other news, thanks for letting us lurk on your lively, interesting, vertical forum. Our jealousy is real, but admiration of what Austin has become is greater.

I've lived in both cities for extended periods and each has their own plusses and minuses. Austin has better vertical growth and infill, but San Antonio has better historical urban environment and feel.

I agree. That's a good way to sum up the differences. Plus San Antonio has the Alamo and the River Walk. It's hard to top those.

I don't think it looks bad from the north; just different. I like the way it looks. Regarding the "industrial" comment, it's not done. I imagine they've still got plenty of work to do on that top part. Once they finish that, it won't look industrial anymore.

From the northwest it looks like a morph between the Spring and the Monarch. It fits but sometimes you don't want a fit.

Viewed from the west at the YMCA or Austin Pets Alive parking lots or driving in on Cesar Chavez from Mopac, it is just this glass and concrete mess that looks like it might be an addition to the Spring structure. It really needs lighting on that side of the building in order to stand out from the crowd.

That is the first picture I've seen of the Bowie that actually resembles the rendering. So as long as you are standing next to that blue dumpster, the vision matches the reality.

Just kidding. I actually really like how the Bowie turned out.

This building Looks best when you can't see the very big and bulky mechanical penthouse, such as in the blue dumpster view above. The building is a bit of an ugly duckling when viewed from 6th and Lamar.

I wish they had just left that wing off and put that space into the tower instead if they needed the space. Not to mention it would have almost surely made it a 500 footer.
