TBM "awaiting" maintenance at Cecile Drive is not very encouraging.

Although there are probably some lessons to be learned in there for tunneling under more urban areas, like Broadway.
There's a very worthwhile Part 2 of that commentary:

Yikes, second sinkhole has appeared. I'd be a bit concerned if I lived in that area...

That is actually the 3rd sinkhole. The 2nd was formed and repaired on Dec 31st, just inside that blue fenced off area.

Ah the joys of tunneling. Looks like they are on top of it anyway. Nothing to see here, move along now...

Well, what's tunneling through a city without some sinkholes ? I'm just happy that no one has been hurt.

Sinkholes are not uncommon in tunneling projects. There not good, thats for sure, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over this.

The Seattle articles have lots of interesting information in them but they are far too biased for my taste. Still worth a look though.

I know people who live in the apartments you can see in the pictures. They are, understandably, losing some sleep.

Did any sinkholes develop when the Canada Line was bored under downtown?

I do believe that a good portion of the downtown is built on solid rock.

I don't know anything about geology, but is it weird that such a big mountain / hill has loose soils?

From what little I remember in geography class from high school, I'm guessing much of it is glacial till.

The gantry crane has been parked at Pinetree and Anson for a while now. It looks like they're nearly done with that segment however and it'll probably be moving in a few days.

Bingo. There are many such hills around the lower mainland. These hills are generally steep on the north facing slopes, and have far more gentle grades along the south facing slopes.

Thanks.
I guess that's why they need to drill in Burnaby Mtn to see if it can be bored.

A sink hole developed in the parking spaces beside that Davie Street fir shop they protest in front of at Homer. The COV fixed it over a couple of weeks.
On the day the TBM exited into the Yaletown station, an engineer for the project said they had to reconfigure the TBM to pressurize the head before they continued because they had run into loose soil just north of the Yaletown station on the first pass.

I am not an expert, but my simple mind putting 2 & 2 together believes they found a narrow band, maybe 100 plus year old fill of loose material on the first pass starting the bend to Granville. Can't prove it of course.

Grant Mattice uploaded some new pics on Dec 19, 2014 including Coquitlam Central Station, an elevated pocket track (located east of the Mariner Way overpass) and Port Moody Station - which already has a finished wooden platform roof.:

I didn't realize that the line west of Mariner Way would be elevated - the Google aerial and map show a couple of creeks in the area - so that may be why.

I believe that pocket track is shortly after exiting the tunnel in Port Moody, around where the future "Port Moody West" station is planned.
