To be somewhat fair to Vancouver, it's difficult to build a Calgary or Montreal-like freeway system in a region that basically requires multi-billion dollar high clearance bridges or undersea tunnels everywhere, and where land acquisition is the highest on the continent.
Like it or not, we simply are not going to have a freeway into downtown Vancouver. It's either $5 billion for a tunnel, or $5 billion to expropriate 5,000 $1 million homes and dealing with NIMBY lawsuits until kingdom come.
I agree that BC can't build a grade-separated limited access highway to save its life, and that the SFPR was a completely squandered opportunity, but let's not pretend that Vancouver is in a position to build a regional freeway network at this point.
