That's a wild picture. I assume it's from the time of construction. Do you know what, if anything, they're using the 61st floor for now?

seeing as the Mellon Tower was complete it had to be at least a few years after judging by the suit would actually say the lates 90s or early 2000s

The article this image is from is a couple of years old. Obama was in office, I know that much.

The construction timetable:

Stage One: February 2015-June 2017. Replacement of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway/20th Street, 19th Street and two pedestrian bridges, and realignment of Winter Street.

Stage Two: July 2017-November 2019. Replacement of the 22d, 21st, and 18th Street bridges.

They are ripping up the brick wall and have construction fences around the southwestern (historic side) corner of 4th and chestnut.

Any idea what is going on there????

I'm surprised the residents of the William Penn House have not started a community garden in the empty lot across the street.

My gawd their building is ugly. It still baffles me how you can argue against a highrise when you live in a highrise.

Ah, I see what you mean. In that web cam, one can see some the brick wall has been removed, and it looks like part of the ground has been cleared. On the SW corner of 4th and Chestnut, as you described.

I didn't even realize that anything was happening there.

No. That's 3rd and chestnut.

I'm talking about 4th and chestnut. South West corner has the wall being taken out.

Yea I posted about it last week, no seemed to have any idea of what is going on there.

Not only have they knocked down the wall, but they've also taken down about dozen mature trees that used to stand next to the bank. Most of them were healthy sycamores. Hard to imagine them knocking down those trees unless something is going to built here.

Building on the National Parkland is sort of a big deal that has happened very infrequently since it was established. And yet, I can't find any info on this anywhere.

Gotchya. I walked over to take a pic at 3rd and Chestnut, and the fence there is the same, and what looks brown in the webcam is really just ivy in the wintertime.

I walked over to the bank between Walnut and Chestnut on 4th, and there is something going on. I wish I took a pic, but didn't because I really didn't see much other than the sidewalk was covered an a small amount of demo.
