Canada is all about the 'we'...

...except when it's all about the "I feel..."

To reply to defishel's comment, many Ottawans have actually travelled outside of Ottawa to discover that tall buildings can be built using regular, mundane (in other cities) building practices, and thus aren't actually worried about a 40-storey building toppling over like a game of Jenga because it HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE AND WE'RE NOT TORONTO!

Sorry about that - I reflexively regurgitated some old, dusty arguments I've heard from people over the years. Hell, maybe they were right...???

I loved living in Absolute. Would be amazing to see my hometown of Ottawa get something Marylin-esque!

These buildings reminded me of Ïce Condos more than Absolute World. They're by Cadillac Fairview, and are 57 and 67 stories.

Let's hope this goes through! Looking forward to the day that Ottawa has a breathtaking skyline just like....ummm...Mississauga? Sheesh...

It's heartbreaking living here sometimes...

YAY! This made my morning... Our downtown really 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 (skyline and architecture wise) so I feel like Little Italy is finally our chance to start over again and build another downtown and skyline in that area. With condo towers, apartments, Dow's lake, and hopefully lots of shops and retail around Carling and Preston, this could become a great vibrant area.

The plans on that page show towers of 18 -48 and 48... Looks pretty good and in my opinion much nicer than the ugly Icon.

I really like the current plans - nicely designed minimalist towers. I just hope they don't change the design again (the current design is the 2nd iteration, I believe). The old tower design is still on the Buzz Buzz Home profile, and I wasn't a huge fan of that design at all. Oddly enough, last I checked, the development docs still show the previous tower designs... Hopefully they will get updated with the new renders soon.

Well, hopefully, they've been heeding the recommendations of the Tall Building Design Review Panel, and reworking the design into something even more awesome (though the second set of renderings are pretty darned awesome as they are).

Perhaps there should be an amendment to the thread title to better indicate that it's about the former Dow Honda and site at Carling/Preston.

I say this because I was reminded that there's also a new Dow Honda development (Merivale/Colonnade), which I drove by last night. Incidentally, that project is coming along nicely. The new building must be at least 3-4x the size of the former.

The word "simple" is used seven times in this document. I'm sick of simple. Simple = Boring. Why can't Ottawa's new skyline be interesting? Let's mix in some bold and daring architecture into our city. Look at Melbourne for example. It has an amazing blend of 150+ year old buildings right next to very modern (almost bizarre) looking buildings. It makes for fantastic eye appeal.

I am even cheerful that the proposed building heights for both the Flats and Isles top out at the low twenties (for now). Compare to Preston-Carling area where Claridge’s now-under-construction ICON building, at 45 stories, will someday be topped by Richcraft’s Carling Station condos going to Planning Committee in January to approve 58 stories, with a second tower in the low 50’s and the “little” 18 storey building which is growing up to 30.
Merry Christmas all!

So the 18-storey building might end up being 30? If that's the case, it's too bad Soho Italia didn't get 35 allowed.

I'm surprised...Eric portrays himself as an advocate of a smart urban planning, yet arbitrarily denies the value of buildings over 'the low twenties' on Lebreton Flats at the nexus of two mass transit lines. I'm actually really surprised.

It seems his views have evolved over the last few years where this is the case. Perhaps his criticism stems from his proximity to these developments (these are in Dalhousie Ward).

He was one of the leading people on the Save Little Italy team opposing the side street buildings. One of his posts argued that the fake Portofino in Florida was nicer than 95 Norman, and how this was an example of what we should have in Ottawa (the town looks so fake and dead, with architectural features merely being painted onto large concrete buildings shaped to look like a series of smaller ones). Then of course he criticized strip malls for trying to recreate old cities and towns with fake architecture, forgetting how he supported it here.

I find his content to be lacking, often just showing some small landscaping in other cities.

My god that 'Portofina' is a monstrosity. What a cheap and cheesy concept. I would HATE to see something like that in Ottawa.

Back on topic: 58 Stories... That would be tall even by Toronto standards. A 58 story condo would likely slot in somewhere between Maple Leaf Square North Tower (54 stories) and L Tower (58 stories)..in other words, the 14th or 15th tallest building in Toronto and the 5th tallest all-residential tower. Mind you, by the time this thing is built (hopefully) Toronto will have at least a dozen new taller buildings.

i dont see the inherent difference to a community between a 20-something storey building and a 40-something storey building. Either way it's a pretty damn high building compared to the surrounding 1-2 storey stuff it's replacing.

I understand community associations arguing that mid-rise development is more appropriate for their community, but this just seems arbitrary.

Toronto definitely will. They have quite a few projects over 50 and 60 stories (several in the 80 range). Franky Gehry redesigned his original 3 towers to be two, one 82 and the other 92 stories.

If these towers in Ottawa get built... I could not possibly imagine. Let's just hope they reduce parking significantly or else the area will be overtaken by cars.

Don't get me wrong, I love to see 40-50-60 storey buildings in Ottawa, but is anybody else worried that they will be built on a fairly low capacity transit line (2,000 phpd with 8 minute headway) with no plans to double the tracks? And that a lot of the people using it will have to transfer at Bayview?
