The towers around 1st and quebec will be nice once concert finally releases the details and floor plans. However one of the buildings on the very corner of 1st and Quebec will be owned by the city and the plans are to make that one a social housing with a 130 homeless housing units (as if we need more in that area). So I'm guessing there won't be any retail (perhaps a pharmacy...no make that a medical pot location that opens up there).

Tourists staying at our hotel have been asking if the Olympic Village area is safe in the evenings, they seem to comment that it looks sketchy and a few said it looked similar to a ghetto in their Country. What's it like now in the evenings are there a lot of transients lurking about? Pandhandlers? or is it pretty safe? (i.e.: the walk from Main station to Tap and Barrell for example). Lots of shiny new developments with 2,000 residents coming in but what about security in the area?

man, your tourists are obviously asian, lol. tell them to spend a weekend in walkable sf or la and then come back to assess the security in walkable vancouver

We all know at least one person is murdered in olympic village every night and dumped into the creek, the city just covers it up as they need the condos to sell to get their money back. I think you should get out of the hotel business quickly before some family sues you for sending them down there and getting them murdered.

OV is brand new. How could they think it looks sketchy? Maybe they stumbled in to the DTES earlier that day.

Thanks Giallo, well i told them to go towards the cranes (meaning by the wall centre) not the one's on Powell street where they most likely ended up...yikes

A couple times a week I walk from Main Station to OV around 10:30pm. Other than the random Panhandler outside Main Station, I feel pretty safe. If anything, the most unsafe I feel is the walk from Main Station to Quebec St. Once I get to Science world sea wall and enter the OV, I have no worries at all.

Within the actual OV itself, there may be the random buggy pusher going between social housing buildings to meet their buddies. They seem harmless so far. In the summer, some randoms smoking weed or drinking on the sea wall. Haven't heard of any stories of them being a problem, other than beach police checkin on the man made island for drug users hanging out.

I do see a Vancouver Community Security smart car cruising within the Village too at night. And due to social housing, Cops are constantly passing through the streets as well to check on things.

There was someone who was attacked with a hammer just outside Science World sea wall on Quebec St recently, but I think that was a random event.

I think these tourists are confusing the OV with another area.

I would love a new market. Right now, the only backyard market is Urban Fare. It caters to a very niche crowd. Its nice to have a few random Urban Fare items, but its definitely not a place to get every day staples due to the near-criminal mark ups.

A safeway, save ons, no frills etc type of market would be great. That way residents can avoid the trek to Broadway or Cambie.

I agree (safeway, nesters, Presidents Choice or IGA) let's hope they put some in the area!

Yes, the kind of Independent grocer we can find on Davie and Bute, but here on Main and first would be ideal

Yes, it would be nice to have an affordable market and other shops right by the skytrain station so that commuters can do their grocery shopping before trekking home. Keep your fingers crossed for that empty lot beside Mc Donald's. Something exciting ought to come up there.

Here's the leasing plan for Phase 2 of West.

It's supposed to have 21,000 sq ft of retail, so in theory, a smaller grocer like Nester's could take up adjacent spaces to have a store:

So I guess no grocery stores in West. Those restrictions seem really odd.
