They seem to be always behind in updating the Roadheader map. Now that the western and central tunnels are connected, I wonder if they'll still bother bringing material up through the central shaft. It seems like a lot more effort to bring it up the gantry crane and then send trucks into downtown when LeBreton looks like a better staging point.

You have both CBD road headers working at the same time, so using LB flats would require Jawbreaker to stop working every time the trucks pass.

Once the confederation line is up and running, how many buses do you think OC wil get rid of? Most of the 60's were bought in 2010 so they will be 8years old.

Most likely it will be the hybrids that OC hates and the Inviros that are getting pretty old.

I don't think they will get rid of any of the buses after the opening of phase I. The line won't add enough to the system to justify any sort of significant reduction in bus fleet numbers. What we might see in 2023 when phase II opens is a few 15-20 year old buses sold or retired without being replaced.

Generally these days buses are built for a 12 year lifespan, although depending on their condition and maintenance they can last longer. Replacing both those sets (the 177 hybrids would still only be about 9 years old then, most are 2009 models) would still require a massive new purchase of buses.

If I were to make a guess, the Inveros - which range from 2004 to 2007 - would be at least partially replaced then. There are 325 of them in the fleet, and they can probably remove about 100-125 from service at the time without replacing with new buses (basically up to 4309, the first three orders).

2023 would be a perfect time to complete Phase 2, since that would be about when most of the 359 articulated buses need replacement, and that extension can largely eliminate a massive new bus purchase (about $250 million to replace the artics one-to-one).

I imagine the city uses pay-as-you-go financing for bus replacements.. every other city that I know of does this. They calculate the cost of replacing a bus, divide by its lifespan, and put that amount into a reserve fund. In that case, the money would already be available come 2023.

So the first phase won't change the fleets numbers much, but phase 2 will drop the fleets numbers by a few hundreds?

I know 40extra DD are coming soon and the Inveros are getting refurbished so I guess we will keep about the same number of buses for a while.

Really? Source?

That'd be great news. The double deckers are awesome and take up so much less space than the artics.

It will be interesting to see how buses get re-tasked after phase 1 and 2. Pretty much all of the 90 series buses will have their routes divided in two so the rerouting will be interesting to say the least. Add to that the need for the city to truly make each station a real hub of activity and connection, Im sure it will result in an entirely new map even with phase 1. And with the reduction in 90 series trips with the end of phase two, perhaps getting more buses to more places and creating transit ways along the medians of Carling, Baseline and Merivale?

Hopefully the city can consider building a BRT network across the city along major routes like Baseline and Carling. It could probably be done pretty cheaply and effectively connect most of the southern neighbourhoods with the trillium and confederation trunk lines

The city is planning a median BRT along Baseline, we have a thread for it somewhere on here.

That seems way too logical to happen.
