Anyway, could not find anything n Tunney's, but I imagine it looked a lot like the anything 30 minutes outside of downtown Ottawa today.
So there was actually once a bay!

Steinberg's was an anchor tenant for Bayshore when it first opened, along with Eaton's and The Bay. A different era I guess. It used to be a good model to allow stay-at-home types to mix shopping and groceries in one visit.
Yeah, I remember as a kid how Bayshore had a Steinberg's, with an M store/Miracle Mart above it. Many more malls used to have grocery stores as anchors.

Here's an old pic inside Bayshore:

I never understood the logic when they disconnected Wellington Street between Lebreton Flats and Hintonburg.

Looking at the current picture, the latest additions to the condo complex on the Flats actually look worse than ever. How can that be? In that picture, it looks like ruins.

It's a screencap of Google Maps which now features 3D buildings in Ottawa. That's not actually a picture, it's a flat aerial image made 3D with Sketchup.

I'm not sure when the Supreme Court's roof was reclad, but for some reason while I always picture Centre Block as having the classic green roof, I always picture the Supreme Court's roof as being black. In fact I never even realized that it was once green until I stumbled upon this photo:

Copper roofs start off black but turn green over time as the copper oxidizes.

Booth Street, LeBreton Flats before it was bulldozed. Ottawa Street was the first street north of the aqueduct.

I've heard people talk about Lebreton Flats back in the day like it was some kind of ghetto. It doesn't look that bad and the kids don't look poor.

They start of a bright copper colour, but quickly fade to a brown colour that lasts much longer.

The oxidation of shiny bright copper doesn't occur fast enough for many old time roofing contractors, and so they used to brush horse urine onto them to speed up the process. They go from shiny "copper coloured" to a dull orangey-brown to a browny-green and finally to the classic dull green. There isn't really any black in the sequence.

Looks a lot like the rest of Centretown west of Lyon.

I am old enough to remember Lebreton Flats before it was demolished. From what I remember, it wasn't that bad. Much like most of older Ottawa. It was a poorer area, no doubt about it, but it was not a ghetto. We drove through the area fairly often on the way to the west end or to Hull. What stood out to me was the O'Keefe Brewery and a pointed building at the very narrow intersection of Albert and Wellington. You can see it in the aerial photo. The railway yards were not very apparent as they were mostly concealed behind buildings. I expect the photo showing the broken windows was just before demolition. What I remember about those days was how much more grubby Hull was compared to Ottawa.

Back in that day, the powers that be talked about almost all of central Ottawa as it if was a ghetto, and would have urban-renewed just about all of it with the same vigour.

They ran out of money.

So I guess we're lucky that only Lebreton & east Lowertown suffered this fate.

And a few other pockets here and there. The US-style "urban renewal" agenda was much more ambitious originally.
