I suppose. Like drinking Coca-Cola is part of the culture in Italy, or smoking Marlboro cigarettes is part of the culture in many developing countries.

I guess.

It's sad that we have to make jokes like this to counter those who want to embrace an other country's culture more than their own. I don't think I would even have a problem with that if they didn't keep denigrating our own. That is GREASY!

Fricking hilarious that the CFL-haters have been forced to retreat from their previous assertion that no one in Ontario was watching CFL games on TV, and now they're resorting to implying that it's people outside of the central GTA who are watching the games. I guess unless it's Rosedale millionaires and Queen Street hipsters watching the games it doesn't really count?

Vanier Cup about to kickoff. Go MAC! Speaks volumes that the anglophone media has ignored this completely, but will likely comment on regular season NCAA games instead. CBC, CTV, Global, CityTV have yet again been a major disappointment.

I'll watch on RDS.

I guess to a small number of people the association with the NFL might give the CFL some legitimacy in their eyes, but for the vast majority the CFL already has suffered from a certain perception of being second-rate to the NFL. I don't see how making it ''official'' would help matters overall.

SRC - the main CBC French network is where you'll find it.

I am watching it on Sportsnet, but if you want to watch it in French I suppose you have your reasons.

I meant SRC. I've been watching French CBC all season despite not understanding 80% of what they're saying. I'll say this for Quebec media: they support domestic culture. That goes a long way in my books.

Stadium looks very close to a sell out.

The rapid changing demographics of the GTA = a cultural shift in the sports landscape of the city/area. Around 50% of the the GTA is foreign born. In Toronto it's about 50%, in some suburban cities the rate is much higher. Canadian culture is not fixed, it's constantly evolving and growing. And I read through much of this thread, I din't read any denigrating of the CFL, quite the opposite. However, I saw a lot more CFL fans (most not even Argos fans or from Ontario) denigrate TFC and the Raptors for no reason.

I don’t understand the antagonism and arrogance on the part of CFL/Argonauts fans when it comes to the MLS/TFC and the NBA/Raptors. The CFL is over a century old in Toronto and the Argos have won multiple titles in recent memory. TFC is less than a decade old and has never made the playoffs. The league is much younger than the CFL and their main purpose is to grow the game in North America. So what is there to be arrogant about? It just reeks of insecurity.

I also have no doubt that the Argos have more fans in the GTA than TFC. They should, look at the history. More fans than the Blue Jays? No way. More fans than the Raptors? I have serious doubts. Until Canadian TV ratings show us the breakdown of demographics and regional viewership then all we can do is speculate.

Mac looking strong so far.

Must be funny or bizarre for the Mac players to hear the refs from RSEQ calling the penalties on the field in French only!

Which proves you didn't read through much of this thread or any of the other sports-related threads on this forum before making your first post. But welcome to the forum.

And the band Les Trois Accords playing the halftime show. Currently singing a song about a 20-something guy having an affair with his best buddy's grandmother!

Well there are thousands of posts in the sports threads but I suppose you're right. I was only responding to what I read. I actually watch as much CFL as I do MLS... zero. I'v never watched the Super Bowl either. I'm just not into football. So I don't have a foot in this race. I do hope that both leagues prosper. I hope to see soccer grow in North America and I think having our own strong domestic leagues is important, especially one as historic as the CFL. Thanks for the welcome.

Yeah I don't understand it either. It seems like people are being asked to pick one or the other. I'm a huge Lions fan but I'm also a big Raptors fan as well. And I'm not sure why it's so horrible that our national sports media promotes the Raptors and Blue Jays so much...we have one Canadian team in each league, who else are they going to cover? Should TSN be talking extensively about the Mariners for BC, the Twins for Winnipeg, and the Red Sox for the Maritimes?

But you also didn't read much of this thread either. If you had, of course, you would have at least known that there are offenders on both sides, but with a particular smugness and arrogance belonging to the anti-CFL crowd.

So, it's a good idea to actually read through a thread before summarizing it, especially for your first post.

What's ''from home" and what isn't seems very clear in the minds of our media. They cover stuff from everywhere of course but stuff ''from home'' generally always gets top billing.

Why not? Can't speak for the rest of the country, but the tradition of Maritimers rooting for the Red Sox dates back long before anyone even considered putting teams in Canada.

I remember a couple years ago the Sox beat the Jays 15-1 and the only run SportsCentre showed was the 1. That's just insulting. And don't get me started on how TSN pre-empted multiple NHL playoff games last year so they can shove their beloved Raptors down our throat. The same Raptors whose national TV ratings are on par with offseason curling. (https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/eh...195853633.html)

Having channels from Toronto telling people over 1000 miles away they should root for Toronto teams under some sort of misplaced guise of patriotism just smacks of social engineering to me. It's not like the Blue Jays are full of Canadian players. And I don't seem to remember the Expos or Grizzlies getting 1/4 the love from TSN or Sportsnet before they moved.

Look how many times the Raptors trend on social media here in Canada and in Toronto. How many times have the Argos trended in comparison, it's not close. The CFL and TSN keeps trolling behind these numbers but refuses to crack them open for us. Southern Ontario is a massive place with a lot of people but is very fragmented on its tastes when you compare the central city to the suburbs and towns. From politics to sports there is some division. So what am I to believe when just the other day they state that the NFL is more popular in Ontario by a bit then CFL. Its getting foolish.
Nobody (and I mean nobody) in southern Ontario west of London cares about the CFL. The NFL is a totally different story though. Even NCAA football (Univ of Michigan) is more popular than the CFL.
