It's a real pity they didn't open the wave back up with some new skylights in the reno...Mind you, when they do expand it will probably be a second floor where the wave is now as they had planned many many years ago.

I just went and checked it out...you can see up in the wave from the holes down the main hallway. It's an ENORMOUS space but it's full of structural steel so they could never open it up fully.

I think the wave makes sense when you see what the layout of the mall was like when it first opened.

Here are two pictures of the mall showing the roof detail. It formed a grand walkway between the two department stores:

Way back near the start - in the 70's:

after the addition of the south wing, but before the new Bay store was built.

Interesting that the round restaurant wasn't yet built in that first pic.

Cool pics. If they add 2nd floor, they should somehow try to keep the roof, such a neat architectural feature.

Here's old mall map from Ottawa Citizen in 1985, showing old alignment between Sears and The Bay.

What was in the round restaurant again? It was on the Queensway side wasn't it?

The round building (queensway side) is still there but buried among the sea of additions. It used to be the Steak n' Burger when I was a kid.

It dates back to the era when malls had "the mall restaurant" rather than the food courts (filled with iffy fast food) we have now.

Here's a pic to get an idea of what the high ceilings used to look like.

Wondering if there was a mould issue resulting from skylight leakage?

Now there's a window to an earlier architecture era!

Probably asbestos too at some point that had to be removed which is maybe why they had to tear out the original sculpted ceillings years ago. It's a shame that they replaced it with a much lower generic dropped ceilling.

It was treat to eat at the Steak n' Burger. It was always a tough choice between it and the Ponderosa that was just down the road.

Hey Harley, I cannot see the image, was it attached?

Ignore my post, not sure how to delete a post, the images came up after a few minutes, I'm guessing my machine is a bit slow.

Dear Mods: A reminder that this should be in Downtown & City of Ottawa and it should be renamed 'St. Laurent Shopping Centre Renovation'

Everest College was shut down by the province last week. Wonder who St. Laurent will find to fill in all that space...
