It's a mess.

The municipal government says they want it and are waiting for the Province to confirm it's happening. The province says they want it and are waiting for the city to confirm it's happening. They're both getting upset with the other for not cooperating.

Or something like that.

Sounds like a good ol' Canadian case of "blame the other level of government"

It's most likely going to at least start out as a BRT.

^ When the City is concerned about the operating costs of a fully funded (in theory) line, it just might not be ready.

It's pretty much already a BRT.

The province has said they'll fund the B-Line rapid transit. The city is asking what does "rapid transit" mean? LRT or BRT? Now that the municipal election is over we're still waiting for confirmation.

Hamilton elected a Mayor who supports LRT btw.

BRT only in Winnipeg, no rail in the works.

London is only talking BRT. Victoria had plans for LRT years ago but have gone no where.

Is this a first in Canada? - I'm assuming yes, but I could be wrong.

Sliding doors at the Train Platform?

Union Pearson Express

I don't like them at all.

I've been in a station that has them and they make you feel like you caged in. They create a very claustrophobic environment almost like the world's longest elevator.

they are also extremely safe, I'm somewhat amazed Vancouver doesn't have them actually given the fully automated nature of the system. They reduce delays quite a bit as they stop people from 1. falling onto the tracks / committing suicide, and 2. throwing trash onto the tracks causing smoke and small fires requiring the fire department to show up. Combo platform doors with automated signalling, and the only thing that can delay a train is an emergency alarm activated by a passenger. Platform doors are common in asia and newer metro stations, and Toronto's Spadina subway extension was originally planned to have them but eventually got cancelled. I wouldn't be surprised if future Toronto subway extensions have them.

I've never felt that way at any station on the Shanghai Metro (which has them on all but one underground line - and the line that doesn't have them has half-height doors instead, which serve the same function), even at stations that have quite narrow platforms.

I totally understand the logic behind them, I just don't like the enclosed nature of them. I feel too claustrophobic and feel like I'm being herded into a door like a bunch of cattle.

I experienced these doors in Hong Kong, and I agree with you. I thought it was a BRILLIANT idea. Safety first, and it didn't feel closed in at all.

... But isn't that the case anyways? You have to go through a door when the train arrives whether or not there are platform doors. :P

And if House of Cards has taught us one thing, it's that platform doors are much, much safer for journalists :D

Good. They have these in the newer stations of the London Underground and they make me feel a lot safer, especially after the TTCs recent suicide attempts the city needs these as much as possible.

We can't use them in Vancouver, due to the different makes of trains with different door locations.
