There it is. Yeah, a bit different now. It does show the future PR 221 coming off 101, which is the new interchange I mentioned.

The whole thing seems asinine, building all those roads to service nonexistent industry. If you ask me the Centreport Canada area was already reasonably well serviced by roads... the segment of CCW that was built was icing on the cake. Adding even more roads to this area would be a terrible idea.

Up until now there's been a difficult time getting investment because there was no servicing agreement in place between Rosser and the city. Now that they've been able to sort out the water issue, the development is beginning to pick up...

In the southern part of Winnipeg you can take a single four-lane route (Bishop) from Route 90 to Lag. On the north side of the city you need to take a minimum of three roads and at least one will have single family residential fronting onto it. As a city as a whole we need better routes in all parts of the city.

Further, as the diagrams have shown, CPT and CCW are part of several different transportation plans for Winnipeg and the greater capital region that is planned to have a single, high-speed, four-lane and hopefully grade-separated road running from Oak Bank to St Francis Xavier, including the City of Winnipeg. This will also be part of the long discussed inner ring road to help solve traffic issues city wide.

Quit complaining that this road doesn't benefit you personally and be glad we are finally acting on a plan to improve how traffic moves around our city.

No kidding, south Winnipeg roadways look and feel like driving in a different city compared to NE, NW Winnipeg where nothing has changed in terms of roadways since the 1960's. I was a proponent of the CP Trail extension but had some doubts about how much traffic would actually use it, well it's more than exceeded my expectations and extending it to at least McPhillips is a no brainer!

Why is getting to Lag so important?

Here's a crazy idea. How about instead of building a route directly parallel to the Perimeter highway to connect the booming metropoli of St. Francis Xavier and Springfield, the province just improves the Perimeter?

This whole "capital region" nonsense has been the worst thing the province has ever foisted on the city. None of it benefits Winnipeg. Highways in greenfields connecting exurbs to exurbs. Great. Just what we need. Hundreds of millions down the drain.

Finish the CPT, sure, but enough wasting money on centreport. What kind of idiot thinks building services to a new and barely existent industrial area is a good idea when this city has many under-developed, under serviced industrial areas?

Asinine indeed.

Or voters. Whoever heard of a road project within a year of an election that wasn't of special interest to voters in some swing riding or other? Or is the idea to trick the whole city into believing that some sort of huge industrial renaissance must be taking place up past the airport somewhere, even if it's a bit too far away to go and have a look?

Exactly this.

The proposed CPT route is no more than a few kms from the Perimeter. Instead of having two inevitably half-assed highways close together, why not fix one up and do it right instead?

And to address CoryB's comment, I am not griping about something that doesn't benefit me personally. I am griping about something that won't benefit anyone personally. I grew up in the NW corner of the city and never did I have trouble getting around on the existing E-W streets like Inkster and Leila. There are no traffic problems there that justify spending hundreds of millions of dollars on an expressway.

Improving current city and provincial roadways seem to be a foreign concept to both those levels of govt., Bishop and Lag. should have already been upgraded to six lanes to alleviate congestion and smooth the flow. I mean even exotic places like Fargo, Regina and Saskatoon have embraced the modern concept of six lane roadways for years!

Esquire; have you ever looked at a map of Winnipeg to see how inaccessible the perimeter is to most of NE, W and SW Winnipeg?

Where does this leave the idea of a Headingley Bypass? Isn't that a bigger problem than whatever problem this huge roadway project is supposed to be solving? Or would traffic now be diverted around both Headingley and the city via this road and the east Perimeter?

My issue with CPW is the friggen lights. Let's build the monster overpasses only to be stopped at 4 sets of lights and then build a rail fly over and have the other tracks as a crossing instead of moving them under flyover. It's a joke period

Yeah, exacty. The Headingly by-pass is supposed to connect up with CCW diverting traffic - mostly truck traffic - off the Trans-Canada. And Headingly has a new development plan in the process of being approved that's adding a lot of residential development just off of the Trans-Canada. The idea is that the number one would be more of a town center with commercial lining the road than the massive transportation corridor it currently exists as. Whether it ever actually develops along those lines is anybody's guess...

How so? The NE and W parts of the Perimeter are some of the busiest stretches of that road, and SW Winnipeg has Bishop Grandin and Kenaston. I would hardly call these areas underserviced, especially given that NE Winnipeg now also has Chief Peguis in addition to Lagimodiere.

Capacity is only an issue at rush hour and thanks to induced demand, traffic will come to a crawl at rush hour no matter how many lanes you have. Otherwise cities like LA and Houston with 16 lane freeways would never have traffic jams, which we know isn't the case.

Esquire would suggest that Bishop should never have been upgraded from the two lane road it was not too long ago as it is a short distance from the Perimeter and going through nothing but farmland (aka where Island Lakes and Royal Wood now are).

I said long been saying Lag, Bishop, CPT/CCW and a western route all need to be made limited access with grade separated crossings. People need to get used to hard choices being made if that is what the collective citizens of Winnipeg want. For example, on Bishop closing River Rd to cross traffic and removing the light completely. There is a u-turn just east of that intersection and a major interchange to the west. Traffic truly coming from those points needing left turns could use those points instead. Instead of two interchanges make Dakota a fly-over with right turn only access. and further east do something to align Island Shore and Beaverbrook. Overall, Bishop needs five interchanges, one fly over and one intersection closure.Lag is similar.

The Legislature will be receiving a bit of an overhaul for its 100th anniversary in 2020.

http://www.cjob.com/2014/11/23/mb-legislature-needs-major-repairs/

Great news if you ask me... the province typically does a shoddy job of maintaining its buildings but this one should be an exception given that the Legislature is the most prominent and most important building in Manitoba.

I think it is nonsense to say that the Perimeter can replace CPT. Try getting from Rothesay and Gilmore to Lag without CPT. You're not going to use the Perimeter, you will take a residential road.

So a new building for Winnipeg? I'm guessing this will likely be built out in UM's Smart Park or some such?

I don't get it. Why build a new facility when the NRC owns 2 perfectly good buildings downtown? Seems wasteful.

So they fired a bunch of scientists because the Government was in cut back mode a couple years back. Now they're at a surplus two years later and are giving them a bunch of money for a new building. When the building they're in is only what a decade old? Seems totally messed to me. Why not just keep the buildings, hire some scientists back (or whomever they are) and there ya go. But that's Harps for ya.

Sounds like they want to make it a business instead of a research facility?
