... Just heard rumor Onni is planning to step in and steal title for tallest in Burnaby from Brentwood with Gilmore tower.

Purely a rumor so take at face value, but how awesome would that be if we got 70+ stories.

I want to believe...

Pretty sure the view East will be just as spectacular, but there is a perception in that area about "North" facing so that's probably why.

There was an indication it would be twin towers - maybe now one:

[PS - so as not to de-rail this thread, post any Gilmore comments in the Burnaby Construction thread]

North facing is dramatically better. Mountains and maybe even Burrard inlet vs flat valley. wtf

View from the 5th floor:

View from the 61st floor:

Yeah.. gotta agree with Pinion, the view of the Burrard Inlet is fantastic, but u wont be able to see it unless u live in the higher floor level. Facing East, I can see the Burnaby Mountain, Mount Baker & Deer Lake though.

If Shape faced such resistence building 70 storey....why would Onni be any different?

Any view is just fine as far as I am concern...as long as you are not looking at other buildings . Or worse others looking into my living room.

I've said it before but I would only hope these taller and girthier buildings being built in the suburbs (burnaby mostly) puts some pressure on Vancouver, downtown specifically to build TALLER.

Its probably wishful thinking though.

Go viewcones! Go! As in go away.

The Gilmore property is further away from the residential streets that are (supposedly) so congested. Being south of Lougheed makes a difference there.

Well... I surely don't mind a twin70-story towers near Gilmore skytrain to serve as the gateway to Brentwood Town Centre

I thought the zoning contemplated up to 70 storeys, but Sharpe chose to build shorter - much like Station Square was scaled back.
It could be a question of economics.
70 storeys could require more elevator shafts, so they chose to build fatter towers (and Brentwood 1 and 2 are pretty wide for Metro Vancouver) instead.

Shape didn't really face that much resistance on 70 stories. Not much in Burnaby really faces much resistance vs other municipalities. In addition, Onni's site is surrounded by less adjacent single family residential vs Brentwood Mall. Onni is surrounded by other towers, office, industrial, retail. Its usually neighbouring single family dwelling residents that oppose heights.

The density proposed of 7.1 is based on what Solo ultimately decided would make economic sense. With the density Bonuses offered by the city each site is only entitled to a max of 5 fsr residential, however there is an additional 5 to 7 fsr available for office/retail and commercial on the same development, so could be up to a max of 12 fsr is all elements are maximized. then there are the additional costs with going higher opposed to shorter or wider. additional elevators, increased structure size eats away at the buildings efficiency. Lover to see taller buildings but economics wins in the end

Oh yeah the views are pretty good in every direction, I just thought the comment that the valley view is equal to north or west was ridiculous.

Pretty awsome looking structures if they do get built.Such imposing sense of arrival when one drives east into Brentwood!!!
Watch out Downtown and Metrotown... your cousin is about to take center stage.
Do you have the link to that proposal? the pictures is so blurry?

That picture is from a map of future projects. I don't think any larger copy has ever been published.

So much greatness going on in Burnaby right now. Anyone buying in anything that is "Burnaby's tallest" is going to be paying lots of extra for nothing long-lasting.

Wow... This just occured to me... By getting the one facing East in the first tower, I will be isolating myself from the busy road noise on Willingdon Avenue

Update from today, someone might actually die if he/she falls down..

In Vancouver, there is an unofficial rule of thumb in building construction: except for a handful of sites that can go taller, new buildings need to be shorter, less glamorous, and shouldn't overshadow anything already built around them. That also means that unlike Burnaby, everything is getting tinnier and tinnier, especially after you factor in viewcones and other restrictions. West Broadway and Main are good examples.
