I live in an area that has two more or less full service grocery stores (food fares), and several smaller places within walking distance. However, we only shop there every now and again for odds and ends. The vast majority of our shopping is done by car at Superstore, by car.

I remember back in my single years (eons ago it seems) my roommates and I actually stole (or used full time) a shopping cart to take to and from the local walking distance supermarket. No one had a car then, but we still only shopped once a week, so you couldn't carry everything back.
When I was poor we lived in an apartment on St Annes and I took the bus most places. Walked more than I do now but to be honest, it just didnt make much sense in the winter. We'd bus to Sobey's and if we only had a couple of bags we'd bus back. If we were doing a big shop, we'd take a cab back. In the summer (and even cooler fall/spring) we'd walk to some places like the local movie rental place. But dead of winter? Very rarely.

I drive everywhere now. When I go to Superstore I admire the condos that are basically in the parking lot and say "that would be convenient. Id walk to Superstore every day." And the gf replies "Yeah but then we'd be living in the Superstore parking lot."

Yesterday morning on CJOB I caught a small part of the 'breakfast with the premier' segment and thought I heard Richard Cloutier ask Greg Selinger about a possible development to occur downtown. I think he referred to it as 'MTS Square' or something like that. Selinger replied that if everything falls into place it may go forward. Just wondering if anyone else caught the segment and if so whether it is the same development that was previously discribed as 'SoPo'.

Don't listen to CJOB but you piqued my curioisty so listened to the segment online. The interviewer called it True North square and yeah, its the MPI lot south west of the arena. Sellenger didn't have much to say about it. Previous to that he did say they play on investing in the highway systems, talk of clover leafs above what has already been announced and it being necessary for centreport.

Always interested in what may happen on the MPI lot and additional infrastructure projects but coming from Selinger at his time sounds like pure desperation in an attempt to save the sinking ship.

The CCW/Inkster/CPT/Hwy 6 interchange I spoke of yesterday in the Roads & Inf. thread? again I know nothing about it, just speculation.

HWY 6 at the Perimeter seems much more likely for an interchange that HWY 6 and CCW which currently do not connect.

They do not currently connect. CPT will dead end an route 90 on the City side. The west side of route 90 is not in the Cities control. So that's where the Province steps in to connect the two (CCW and CPT). At some point anyways. Since everyone at the City is touting CPT as needed for CentrePort, I'm just connecting one and the other. But you're right, that Hwy 6 is a prime location for an interchange. Should be higher on the list than a lot of others.

^ Is connectivity in the NW fringes of Winnipeg really an issue? They just spent a ton of money on Centreport Canada Way, and as far as I can tell it's not that busy. What is a connection to Peguis really going to accomplish? This supposed "need" seems mostly imaginary relative to the actual pressing transportation needs in this city... you know, rapid transit, measures to reduce congestion and eliminate bottlenecks on busy routes, that sort of thing.

It's supposed to relieve truck traffic on Inkster west of Route 90...

That is seriously their rationale. Rather than having the truck traffic come off the perimeter via Inkster, the idea is that they'll be able to hit Centreport Way and then continue on via the CPT to either Route 90 and then the perimeter or stay on the CPT if they're moving through the city.

I was just outlining what the plan is. I'll also just provide some more info since were on the subject.

Inkster/101 interchange will be decommissioned at some point and be strictly a rail overpass.
New interchange will be located about 1 mile south, final location TBD.
CentrePort Rail Park will be located immediately south/on top of Inskter.
The stupid rail crossing of CCW just north will be religned to not cross at some point.
CCW forms part of the west leg of the beltway. The south Sturgeon access will be where the beltway will continue south through Murray Industrial park to connect with Moray.

Here we go!

Yeah, I was just looking into it a little further and it appears that the plan is actually to have Centerport Way merge into Inskter west of Route 90 at some point. A large portion of the exiting Inkster infrastructure will still exist, it'll just be the more northwesterly portion of what's currently existing. From there, it looks like the PTH6 will eventually tie into CentrePort/Inkster leading all the way from the perimeter.

So the CPT will actually terminate at Brookside forcing all the traffic South on Brookside to hook up with CentrePort Way a couple miles south.

This is roughly what the plan is.

And this is what CCW/CPT would look like at full build out.

ON a different note. There was discussion recently about the Disraeli AT bridge and it's lack of connectivity to any other AT routes, specifically the Raleigh/Gateway corridor on the north side.

CoW has a motion "directed to do all things necessary to investigate and recommend a safe route that connects the active transportation system adjacent to the Disraeli Freeway with the Marconi walkway and the active transportation bridge with Nairn Avenue,"

The bottom one must be an update to the city's TMP. The original version had no connection between the CPT and the CCW; the CPT terminated at Brookside on the southern border of Precinct A. Traffic would then hook up with Inskter/CCW west of Brookside and carry on sort of Southwest towards the perimeter.

Anyway, where you're now referring must be the park running through Little Mountain Park, right?

Yeah, those images are something I sketched up. I'll see if I can find where it says that CPT and CCW will be linked. But yeah, the TMP didn't show them connecting. The TMP is a good document, however there are some inconsistencies with routing. Same goes for teh Bishop connection to Fermor. It basically eliminates a connection to Plessis, which really doesn't work for me.

It does say as a disclaimer that the routes are general guidelines. Any specifics are left out and will be determined during actual design phase.

^ Pretty sure that the CPT/CCW link-up was contemplated in the 2011 TMP.

It's funny how this road can't get built fast enough despite an absence of much in the way of private investment in Centreport Canada.

Here it is.

Hopefully with the water plant going ahead this year, we can see some actual development. I was thinking the same thing. Everyone keeps saying all these projects are needed for CentrePort, but there nothing on the other end.

Gonna try to upload a picture having never done it. This is a screen shot ripped right out of the city's TMP from 2011. Map 5 I think - strategic networks. It's looking like things have evolved...
