Im really aggravated today, moreso than usual.

I live in St Norbert. So the on-going, seemingly endless construction on South Pembina for the over-pass re-build is bad enough. But then they decided to close Waverly south of the Perimeter. This basically provides one way out of St Norbert (Pembina) and backs traffic way up Grandmont in the morning.

The Waverly construction appears virtually complete and Waverly looks like it could be used bothways but they keep it blocked. I've seen no one working on it since last week. Why not open it??

Not only is this inconvenient but if there was an emergency in St Norbert during rush hour, it wouldnt be easy to get out (though I suppose they could just drive the wrong way down Waverly). i've been tempted to shove the barricades aside.

I think a lot falls on the poor oversight of those doing the work by the city and by the incompetence of the companies the city hires to do the work.

My journey takes me down Henderson everyday and they have been working on resurfacing the north bound lanes of Henderson from McLeod to Springfield since July, 5 months to strip old asphalt, rebuild the curbs and some side-walks and the final asphalt has yet to be put down, unbelievable!

My Favourite from the past summer/fall/today...

They resurfaced a street in my area, shaved down the street and all the intersections with it. They laid the asphalt down for the street but left all of the intersections half finished. To this day I still need to go down/up a 6 inch bump just to cross the street.

There was a report in Free Press in the summer saying that the City Administration was telling council that cost had gone up because there was more work this year than the contractors could reasonably do and they (contractors) were building in the cost of the not meeting the construction deadlines into their bids.

This can be seen by some of ongoing projects as noted by the posters above. The Henderson Highway project was suppose to be done in 60 working days according to the tender document. There was an accelerated construction bonus if it had been completed earlier.

Apparently on the Henderson project they discovered that the median curbs were not actually attached to the roadway. They were not able to proceed until they excavated, poured and attached a small piece of roadbed and then fastened new curbs to it before resurfacing could occur. I think this put them two weeks behind.

Waverly appears virtually done. No idea why they go several days doing nothing. This morning they were working on something on the dirt road west of Waverly. They could have opened Waverly to both directions, alleviating the bottle neck at Pembina. They should have been working 24 hours on that project.

re: Glasshouse Parking

I live in the Woodwards complex in Vancouver and we have 2 levels of underground which is not enough parking for a 42 and 30 storey towers. So in this case a lot of the parking is across the street in the Gastown parkade. The majority of the floors have half the floor gated off for resident parking giving us security over the otherwise wide open parking. I imagine this is what is envisioned for them.

Looking at the whole Winnipeg region in general, the trend in property crime has seen a decrease. Immobilizers,(car theft) have been a huge factor and car alarm systems have helped to a degree,(there's ways around them), Smash and grab..as the most obvious example.
Some may argue the fact that many of these crimes go unreported but the damage to a vehicle is never going to be less than the deductible for any forced entry to a vehicle,(reported immediately), unless of course you leave the car door open, no damage. theft yes, if items left in plain view.

Trends Current up until 2012:

I wonder what caused the spike in property crimes from around 2000 to 2008 or so...

Generational type thing is the most likely cause. WPS set-up the auto-theft task force around that time. Immobilizer's became mandatory shortly thereafter. There was a very small group of people, relatively speaking, causing a huge amount of crime. There was something like 20-30 chronic offenders for car thefts.

Those numbers seem off to me. IIRC there was something like 12,000 cars a year being stolen. Ridiculous. I guarantee you stealing cars was not their only ventures.

Edit: Ahh those numbers are per 100,000 people. So around 12,000 vehicle thefts per year is bang on.

Yeah, I think it was 18 Picardy Pl. Thanks for the update.
This one was found at http://www.buzzbuzzhome.com/urban-glo-condos

Seems to have changed dramtically from the 1st render as they usually do, less glo in the updated version.

^^^ They received complaints that their design closely resembled another building already in existence. That's why they changed the design.

^ Curious, if that hadn't been the case, which would have appealed to you more, from an architectural stand point?

All the colours and forced perspective seems a bit childish to me. Not a big fan. Is this lighting effects, paint, cladding? Or just fancy for the rendering, but wont actually be built? IIRC there were some other proposals recently that had colours which were dropped.

This project has a very tight budget, and some less than appealing construction systems (slab on grade main floor).

I suspect it will have a hard time looking anywhere near the newest render - if it gets built in the first place.
