We've discussed and seen the Engstrum on NLA many times, but I don't believe we've seen this brochure before.

The seller didn't include any photos of the inside of the brochure.
...but it's still for sale if anyone's interested.

Mr. Howard had moved his nursery from 3rd and La Brea to this location as he felt there was a great future here in the outskirts of Los Angeles.... Meanwhile, back at 3rd and La Brea... after Howard's nursey decamped, it sounds like there might have been some temporary uses during the war and postwar years such as a "public hiring hall" in 1949. And then...

Which, as we've seen, gave way to the bigger Ralphs...

The Cresta Blanca sign seems to have had a nice run.

Looking northeast across Fairfax and Wilshire Boulevard, ca.1950

Great, busy view of the intersection. Simon's Sandwiches bottom left, May Company and the annex (low, white building beyond May Co.). Cresta Blanca sign and a really nice array of cars and the Studebaker tells me we're flirting with 1950.

detail from a Whittington aerial.

According to honestbuildings.com, the building currently at 1424 S Main dates from 1908, so that means it's the old Moran and McMenamy garage.

Fantastic peaked gable/roof on the right. I don't think I've ever seen one so pointy. ouch!
Does anyone know where this was located in Pasadena?
(maybe we've discussed it before...but I certainly don't remember this rather unique building)
According to the October 4, 1910 edition of the Los Angeles Herald, the YMCA building in Pasadena was at Raymond Avenue and Ramona Street.
I found this clipping through a great article on chandlermuseum.org. It has the story below, and several other clippings from old newspapers
relating to the fundraising.

California Digital Newspaper Collection

Here's another postcard of the building.

www.usgwarchives.net

It doesn't look like Raymond Avenue and Ramona Street actually intersect anymore (if they ever did). The location would be near Pasadena's Memorial
Park, so the YMCA building would have been a near neighbor of the old public library written about by sopas ej back in post #4465. The postcard
below shows the YMCA's building at 235 E Holly Street, which is about a block away from Raymond Avenue, and backs onto Ramona Street. It's dated
by the seller as 1950s. I've been trying to work out when it replaced the building above. A 1987 article in the LA Times discusses the proposed closure
of this facility, and describes it as a "76-year-old building", which would date it as one year younger than the building above. Maybe they meant that
a YMCA building had been there that long.

eBay

This building's still there, although it's lost the balconies on the right.

I was going to mention it before and quote this same photo, but I didn't.
But I have to chime in since CBD also expressed my same sentiment.

This photo is just of a staircase, floors, walls and a clock, but how beautiful it is. It makes me wonder if indeed "the interior has survived better than the exterior."

I'd love to see the interior; wondering what colors it is, too.
I was going to comment on this beautiful staircase too, but I thought that my comment 5 hours before would sound mean spirited. Here it goes, what I wanted to say. Maybe people in the 1930's had more common since and there were no ambulance-chasing personal injury lawyers around. Larry, I'm talking to you. I have seen your TV commercials since 1981 on LA TV

I lived in this building for a couple of yrs. In fact, my room was the set of windows that are 2 floors below what would have been the center balcony. Very hot during the summers, due to the west face and they boarded up the transom window above each unit's door. Very spartan in amenities. It has/had a community kitchen and bathroom/shower rooms on each floor. Moved out when it went Section 8. I do remember seeing the cornerstone on the front left corner of the place, I want to say it was laid in the mid '20s to early '30s. The pool is still visible through the basement windows along the front. Although, it is covered, for safety reasons. The steps that are barely visible on the left were removed, and the doors that they lead up to, was the "Boys Entrance". It was and may still be called "Centennial Place".

Thanks for your additional information C. King / and for your excellent research HossC. It's much appreciated.

Oh, and thanks for explaining that double round-house Wig-Wag (aka Jack).
I was really curious about that.

So sad.

Are there any plans to develop the former site of the Auditorium? It's been a parking lot for decades. (it's such a prime location facing Pershing Square and all)

Yes there are, though they aren't as great as they should be:

Godzilla posted this picture of Vermont Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard yesterday in post #24577 - I thought it deserved to have the blemishes removed.

www.you-are-here.com

It looks better with the signage removed, although I'm undecided on the current color scheme.

GSV

The USC picture at the top was originally posted by TheGriz in post #1111. The post includes the following:

Looks like you can see Barnsdall Art Park (may have still been known as "Olive Hill" then) in the background; is this the side facing Hollywood blvd? It kind of looks like where the gates/parking lot are now. If that's correct, then the building in the photo isn't there anymore, but the foundations still are.

The building in the photo is still there. The maps I've found simply refer to it as Residence "A".

Google Maps

Just for fun, I thought I'd show how Barnsdall Park had changed over the years. In 1948, it still occupied the whole block. The main entrance appears to have been at the northeast corner, just out of shot on the 1937 USC picture above.

Historic Aerials

The area on the eastern side of the block had already been cleared by 1952, but the aerial image is a bit blurry. By 1954, two large buildings and a parking lot had been constructed there.

Historic Aerials

By 1972, the park had been reduced to its current size. Some of the perimeter buildings have changed since then, but the layout is roughly the same, including the new entrance on the north side.
