Just when you think there is some clarity on location . . .

I did notice about a month ago GSL was recladding their building, not sure they would be pouring $$ into that if they were going to be moving soon.

Although I strongly doubt that the Flames would want to continue to partner with the Stampede, the suggestion that they're looking at something huge -- arena, stadium and field house, plus whatever comes with it -- makes me wonder whether the West Village would even be possible.

Didn't you here? The only spot with enough space is the recently abandoned development by Calaway Park. Transit will be a bit of an issue, but the wide open space will leave lots of room for epic Stampitecture.

So what's the plan to pay for a new arena? I cannot in a million years see city money going to a project like this, there's just no pressing reason. Unlike Edmonton, Calgary has no need to revitalize the downtown. There's no way that the Provence can contribute since they turned Edmonton down. So the question becomes: Are the Flames willing to foot the bill for the whole thing? I'm not sure they are.

Been waiting 5+ years for an announcement, despite being told by Ken King that an announcement would be coming the next few months everytime he mentions the new arena.

Hopefully we actually get sometime definitive by the time 2015 rolls around.

Because as much as this city is starting to improve it's design standards it's still got a built in accountant / pragmatist mentality that produces subpar, conservative designs. Plus the Flames ownership strikes me as being a bunch of tight wads who would only build something amazing if it was on the public dime.

Plus all the foot dragging throughout the process makes me think that they have a hard time making decisions. If that's the case I see the end result being a compromise that won't upset any of the shareholders. Even though they're billionaires they seem to want public money to build this thing. The richest people are always the cheapest.

With that said, I don't think it's unreasonable for some public money to support what is going to be built. In fact, it's going to happen one way or another, so mentally prepare yourselves now.

Are we talking direct City investment in the arena/stadium/complex? Or more along the lines of infrastructure, like re-jigging bow tr or gifting the bus barn land?

What about this concept? What if the stadium went into the railtown area, more definitively where the city has land for the HSR station. On level one - the city/province builds a transit hub, a central station for the regional transit network. Then the new stadium is built - much like Penn station in NYC with Madison Square Garden - above.

The land is "donated" by city and province and the flames build the arena? I am sure there are lots of holes in this idea but would it even be a possibility in a theoretical sense?

I would lean more towards what Surferguy suggested for the city's investment. If we were awash in money and didn't have the urgent capitol projects like the new green line I'd say go right ahead, but as it stands now they need to get to the back of the line.

They are a business, and if you look at the GM corporate identity all of the the dealerships are upgrading their looks. Let's say that at best a new arena is 2 years away from breaking ground, that's two years of car sales. They need to still look appealing to the buyer. GSL has huge fleet sales so that dealership is huge for them.

^ My guess with GSL is that the manufacturer required them to start the reno, as I've noticed it's been going on for months and months without much progress.

Yes, it has to be the slowest reno ever. Shaganappi was done quite quickly. GSL seemed to really drag on.

Well as long as you think it's not unreasonable, I guess it's fine then. Wait. If it's going to happen one way or another, let's do it without public funds.

I'd rather see money spent on affordable housing.

I appreciate the warning though, but I we're better off bracing ourselves than preparing mentally.
