Lol what are you smoking? No it's not. According to US News & World Report, Princeton, Harvard, Yale and Columbia rank ahead of Penn which ranks ahead of Brown, Cornell and Dartmouth.

Not to mention Penn has the best business school in the country, arguably the world.

That was an unwarranted jab. Love them or hate them, Penn is a world class institution and a critical piece of the economy of Philadelphia. Why hate?

Not to mention a top-5 medical school, nursing school, and communication school, a top-10 law school, vet school, dental school, and education school, and lots of top-10 liberal arts departments.

But our friend PhillySteaks is merely channeling his prior Pennsgrant persona (am I the only one who's figured that out?) and his deep-seated resentment of Penn, so I wouldn't take his Penn-bashing too seriously.

Blatstein to present plans for mega-project at Broad and Washington

Blatstein will present his plans at the monthly HEC meeting on Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Hawthorne Cultural Center at 1200 Carpenter St. Blatstein originally planned for a 400,000 square-foot low rise complex without a residential component when he first announced his intentions back in March. Then, his plans changed in a big way in June . He told the Philadelphia Business Journal that he wanted to take everything he’s done in Northern Liberties with the Piazza and pack it into this new development, adding 800 units to the already conceived retail space. He called it ”a self-contained community where you will never want to leave.” It will be interesting to see what the nearby neighbors have to say about his plans.

Is it just me, or does Blatstein not really get cities or how they work? He keeps trying to create these self-contained communities in the city (let's not forget he's said similar things about his casino proposal). His outlook just screams "suburban mall" to me. The Piazza isn't bad, but lets remember how many other actors were involved in dragging Blatstein along on that.

Honestly I feel that this is an over-provision of amenities for the site, which may hurt rather than boost development nearby. I dearly hope to be wrong on that.

I'd prefer he build something with perhaps a third as much retail and plenty of residential. I want to see this parcel catalyze more commercial development along all of South Broad, not soak up so much conceivable demand that it's going to make new high rise mixed use less attractive.

Pretty shitty thing to say to your fellow forum members, especially when so many of us take pride in Penn.

Now, aside from all the other accolades mentioned by other forum members, let's not forget the history of the University of Pennsylvania, and that its history is deeply routed in the last 250 years of Philadelphia's history.

Think of who founded it and what accomplishments have come from the institution. My personal favorite is that of ENIAC:

http://www.upenn.edu/almanac/v42/n18/eniac.html

Also consider the famous (and infamous) alumni too. My personal hero went to Wharton, that would be Elon Musk.

http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/125anniversaryissue/musk.html

So PhillySteaks, there are nicer ways to tell the rest of us to stay on topic. You don't have to burst everybody's bubble when you do it.

Bring it on Blatstein! Better be good. And while you're at it, finish the Schimdt's development and build those two towers on that massive empty lot in NoLibs already damn it!

Maybe he can bring either a City Target or Walmart to this location. That would be nice. Maybe a movie theater too?

I sort of agree. Blatstein does engineer good projects. But I like to walk around and venture to different spots. I would not want to inhabit some self-contained complex and never leave. Is there a big demand from people in the city that would? It may well attract enough inhabitants, but I'm not really seeing it.

Something like this in Boston would be really cool. It's a Best Buy and a movie theater and some restaurants.

Up, up and away ...............

I read that it will be sometime in 2018 before CITC is completed . Why so long .
I can't find any design changes anywhere and I believe the construction approval
has already been signed off on , so what's the hold up on moving forward . I
might be wrong about this but , it just seems to take so long to get anything
done . In the meantime L.A. and S.F. don't appear to be having any trouble
launching the Salesforce Tower ( S.F. ) or the Wilshire Grand ( L.A. ) both of
which are well over 1000' ........ Maybe I'm just being impatient .

CITC is already well underway. Have you been by the site lately? They're already doing foundation work, and CITC is progressing MUCH quicker than Salesforce Tower which hasn't even done excavation yet.

Wilshire Grand in LA however, started construction about 9 months before CITC, so I would expect it to be further ahead. Either way, CITC will be taller than both Wilshire Grand and Salesforce when completed.

Agree with you on most of this, but the towers in NoLibs made no sense and still don't. Outside of Girard, the road infrastructure is more neighborhood-like and wouldn't have any road access on the east side of those buildings. Two towers the size he proposed in an area that dense need better road access. Towers like that would be more feasible at Broad & Washington or Spring Garden & Delaware over Girard & 2nd....just my opinion.

No , sadly I have to admit , I haven't been in town since July 13th. to witness the
Phillies having their ass' handed to then by the Washington Nats the last game
before the All Star Break . I apologize for being a bit edgy about the CITC site .
....... I haven't had my chocolate fix in three days .

Sorry to bring it back to Penn, but rumor has it Penn Tower's demolition is being moved back to February 2016. This is the actually tower, still waiting to hear about the garage.

This could be because of any number of things, but most notably the issues they been running into at Perelman would have to top the list.

The new Garage has progressed quickly. If they can get done all the foundations by the end of this month, they should be able to work on interior during bad weather and have it ready for March, imo.

I asked about new renderings or plans for the front third of the lot, I should hear back shortly.

In your opinion, how tall would 800 units be? I know its a big land mass, but would this really be of any significant height? Southstar is 85 units, if you double the floor space with 6 stories of apartments, that might suggest that Blatstein's proposal would be 30 stories tall on top of the 1/2 larger retail stories and not including the roof top mecca he dreams about...bringing it to over 300 feet? I'd love to see it, but would zoning allow that?
