Isn't that newer excavation for the mat foundation under the core, as Plokoon11 suggested? I know he thought it might not be in the right location for that, but from the photos, it appears to me that it is on the eastern portion of the site, where the core will be. It also appears that this newer excavation is below the parking level in the cross-section posted by shadowbat2. And, it appears to be primarily in rock (perhaps bedrock?) based on the presence of the hoe ram and the large chunks of broken rock throughout. At least that's what it looks like to me.

I agree with Philly Fan. As you can see in this video (around 0:37), the core is in fact on the western section of the site. Not that I'm putting to much certainty into it, just a guess.

^^^ Oooops, I meant to say that the excavation appears to be on the western side of the site, which is of course where the core will be. When I typed the word "eastern," I was still kinda burnt out from that Eagles game.

They are in the process of taking a full lane of the street on arch and 19th. I guess this will allow for room for construction trailers to be installed and more on site parking for vehicles. The are busy digging out the area where the core will rest. Lots of water down there.

Noticed some outer perimeter re-bar in the parts where they dredged. Also noteworthy is the concrete hose system is being made so cement trucks can stay at street level.

Looking at the pic Londonee posted, the back retaining wall looks sloped down to the left. Optical illusion ??
