You do realize that 'construction' is a very broad topic with many relevant and differing variables, right? It's not just somebody posting a picture of a crane?

It should be allowed to continue. Its the first interesting conversation this thread has had in a long time!

Viking, speaking of the now dead P&M hotel... Has there been any update on that location with its new owner?

Also, while were on the topic of hotels. Whatever happened to the city closing the St Regis Hotel... That is still one of the most horrific buildings to walk by at any time during the day. Would be nice to clean out their clients from the area.

Or was closing that based on Fortress actually building anything on the lot beside it?

It was just the pub that closed in there. What remains is a hotel that caters to an Aboriginal clientele. But don't you think it's kind of mean-spirited (not to mention futile) to shut down any place that Aboriginals congregate, even if it's for innocuous purposes like medical appointments and business meetings? That is kind of the story of urban renewal in downtown Winnipeg, but it hasn't really worked.

I get closing down bars that have drunken brawls and drug dealing out front, but legitimate hotels should not be subject to this.

True story: I once had a client meeting at the St. Regis with an older Aboriginal man. Grubby jacket, ball cap, the kind that Centreventure would probably think is dragging down the SHED. As it turns out, the guy owned a not-that-small business in Ontario and has a net worth into the millions. He could have easily afforded a Fairmont Gold room, but he felt comfortable at the St. Regis. The point being, don't judge books by their covers.

You're right about the futility. All that's happening is that same clientele is being driven into the Marlborough and the Radisson. They've successfully affected nothing except the bottom line.

And just for clarification, CV bought the St. Regis and as part of the lease agreement back to the same ownership demanded the beverage room be closed. There was an RFP out for redevelopment of the site with the same ownership having submitted, but either nothing has been decided upon or they're keeping it very quiet. Any redevelopment is going to have to include a beverage room, though. A downtown hotel can't survive without a bar.

Just noticed that I am not seeing the crawler crane boom anymore from the apartment block going up off of Edison and Rothesay. I guess now its just all the interior trim out and then Edison Rentals can start to rent.

I'm not sure if you are calling me out on being a racist or not. But my problem isn't with the race of people that frequent the hotel it's about the type of people that do.

When did they close the bar? I used to walk by that building daily on my way to work but have chosen to take a different route due to the people hanging out in front of the building. I decided to no longer walk by that building after 2 large men told me to "Not walk on their territory white boy" (I removed the more "colourful" language) after I didn't give them money.

This happened about 2 months ago, and I took them up on their kind offer to no longer pass by there.

Fortress won the RFP for redevelopment of that project. Nothing has been mentioned on their intentions for the building.

We're supposed to be seeing a new, different design rendering from Fortress in the coming months for SkyCity. Maybe it will include the St. Regis redevelopment.

My understanding of their interest for the site was a parking structure. This was part of the hold up on the Pumphouse project - the originally earmarked $5.6MM for the development of an Exchange parkade was now being allotted towards the subsidy of this project.

Again, as is my understanding. Obviously that's gone nowhere...

..... but it has not changed the problems that exist around the St. Regis by any large degree. How to change the perception and reality of this problem is still a large issue that has not been addressed yet.

We want downtown residential density and folk coming downtown to live, work and play but this issue still has to be solved.

On an unrelated hotel note: I once stayed at a Holiday Inn Express and enjoyed it immensely.
