^I wouldn't necessarily say that. There are lots of mining and engineering firms in Saskatoon that don't necessarily build office downtown or require large amounts of space. Regina has benefited from the Hill family that has worked with the government to build offices to suit and has had a vision for larger scale commercial building ventures.

Looks like Calgary's WAM 10th Avenue is now underway. The site is a formerly abandoned project that was built up to street level, then cancelled and bought by WAM. Apparently the site is very busy today with new fencing up and tons of workers on site. Another 500 units for the Beltline Now all we need is that parking lot filled in by the Sutton Place Hotel!

Like it or not, this new Holiday Inn has been approved and construction is about to start. This article is from today. First ten storeys are the hotel, then 30 storeys of rented appartments.

That is pretty sweet actually. Getting more rental apartments downtown is never a bad thing. Calgary is just starting to bring our first new rental towers in decades on to the market.

A lot of forumers don't like this Holiday Inn.... I think it's pretty nice quite frankly. It's not like it has to be signature tower!

How can the construction of that Holiday Inn be anything but good news? Sure, it's a little bit tacky, but look at what was there before:

Not an architectural masterpiece by any means, but this part of downtown really needs the extra residents, and this part of René-Lévesque is screaming for new towers. That section of street west of E-Commerce Place (the CGI building) is extremely vacant, windswept and depressing at the moment.

Regina & Saskatoon have a mix of companies with offices headquartered in each city, Regina seems to have more Government, Wheat handling, Steel, Oil refining. Saskatoon more Uranium head offices, Diamonds & Specialty mining, Biotech, Research, Potash split between the two cities.. most of Regina's offices tend to be downtown, Saskatoon's offices in research & industrial parks.

Interesting to see another proposal for a provincial tallest in Saskatoon. Regina & Saskatoon have probably exchanged title of city with provincial tallest building more often than any two other cities in Canada.
Regina held the title with Legislative building & then Hotel Sask until 1932 when Saskatoon's Bessborough hotel was built. Regina reclaimed the title in 1967 with Avord Tower, Saskatoon reclaimed title in 1983 with La Renaissance Apartments, Regina reclaimed provincial tallest title in 1992 with McCallum Hill Centre II.

Didn't someone try to burn it down too? I heard it was a hangout spot for biker gangs...

Exactly. Clean, modern, infill.

The Azure - Calgary

The first in a string of redevelopments along 16th Avenue (TransCanada Highway) which will eventually see the avenue's transformation into a mixed-use densely populated corridor. The street already has a BRT Transitway proposed and will likely start construction in the next few years.

That render of Azure in Calgary must be by an out of town firm because they show a vertically oriented traffic signal - Calgary prefers horizontal ones (am I really that much of a geek?)
Oh and BTW - 16th Ave is anything but a "highway" through Calgary - they should remove the TCH designation from it, that's embarrassing.

I'm really happy for Saskatoon, hope that new provincial tallest gets built.
