I love the big signage. Winnipeg need more cool old style signage. I love traveling to other cities and seeing all the lighted and colourful signs every where. The older pictures of downtown Portage always look so big city with the signs, murals and billboards on all the buildings.

And we lose a landmark ice cream vendor. Would you feel the same if BDI decided to lvl there place and do this? Maybe skinners or half moon. You people see residential and get all googly eyed. There is hardly any residential to this. It's a big ugly and probably stucco communist block.

Btw there is a huge parking lot beside it that this ugly thing could go and still save the original BB. But that isn't going to help all the residential condos with parking In the front in this area ,,,,,,,,so your density will be parked cars and a few street front residential. Which in time BB will succumb to higher rents and go the way of the passenger pigeon and you will get some crappy unwanted store that has no use in the area to fill it. Or they will make it ALL residential.

Banana Boat will be occupying the commercial space in the building. I believe it is the current owner that is spearheading the project in this form. I think it is great.

I know Winnipeg has a hard time dealing with change, but good grief, "save Banana Boat"?! It's a throwaway fast food building from the 60s, not exactly what I'd call an architectural landmark. At least the BDI has merit.

Bottom line, this project preserves Banana Boat and adds to the neighbourhood. More people + more business. Darn Asians with their cool design, better streetfront presence and increased density.

I guess depicting it in the rain allows the warm glow of the light from the windows to distract us from the drabness of the exterior?

I'll throw my support behind it if the "Eat Ice Cream" sign actually goes up with it.

Do they still have the portable sign in front? I remember back around 1978 my classmate was running for class president in Junior High and rented the Banana Boat portable sign for her election message. It got her an interview on CBC I think, or maybe in the Tribune (the Free Press wouldn't have stooped to cover such frivolousness).

banna boat is closed half the year anyways so this would open it up to more sustainability within its buisnes model by the looks of things cudos to them for wanting to grow their investment

Agreed. Even ignoring the blatant racism of the jibe against Asians, there's a lot to recommend the new design over what's currently there. It'd add residential density and a second storefront, and improve the pedestrian appeal of what's currently a pretty grim block (lots of deep setbacks and parking lots).

As for "Save the Original BB", we're not talking about the Eaton's Building here...

It's not the current owner of the Banana Boat spearheading this. This has been Tony Bagnulo from Tony's concrete trying to get this off the ground for years. Banana Boat is expecting to be a tenant, but they've had difficulty filling the other commercial units and they've been trying for years. Obviously the rental rate is the hurdle on new construction given that the area is on the weaker side.

I wouldn't get too excited about this one quite yet.

Thanks for clarifying the ownership, I wasn't sure. Hopefully they can make this project work.
