The 300ft view cone is, I think, the same one that limited the Telus office tower (render below)
- so the question is whether - if Telus got all those perks (protruding boxes and all)
but not extra height - will Holborn get height?

Holborn's advantage is that it is above Granville Station.

The proposed office height is 289 feet, which includes a slight incursion into the Cambie Street view corridor. This incursion into the view corridor would be for the photovoltaic appurtenances on the roof of the project. Staff feel this minimal incursion into the view corridor is consistent with previous discretion used in other circumstances, and serves the City’s sustainability interests.

I'd saved copies of some of the City's boards from that higher building review (early 2010?), in which all of the sites other than Burrard Gateway were rejected - these would make a big impact on the skyline:

Nice, thanks.
That would do a lot to balance out the skyline.

If I propose to tear down Cambie street bridge (just like the Gerogia viaducts), will the viewcone bylaw become void as well?

No. you'd have to tear down City Hall - the view cone they mention is from 12th Ave - i.e. the City Hall view cone.

Isn't the middle supposed to be recessed?
It's just that the colour blocking goes awry when it hits the corner.

But why the heck is there a glass awning UNDER a solid canopy?

The best entrance reno (on a brutalist building) is at 1075 West Georgia
- a very elegant understated glass canopy with a stainless steel tube on the end.
(although the Coast Capital entrance adjacent is a bit gawdy)

The same (or similar) could have been done at 200 Granville, respecting the waffle grid of windows.

I'm interested (as im sure Holborn is too) as to what BCIMC/Bentall gets at the Post Office Site. Rumour in the industry is that they are going very big.

The Bay Parkade will help open access from SkyTrain to the Post Office site (even though Holy Rosary Cathedral and 401 West Georgia are in the way).
I think they need to go big to counteract the dead space created by the cultural spaces in the area.

Not an update, but Global TV has put together some Google Streetview before and after pictures of many Downtown projects in the last five years. I found it interesting in context of projects that didn't exists before I moved in here. Worth checking out.

I mentioned how the lighting used is pretty shabby. But the more irritating part of the facade is the lousy job whoever installed the panels did in aligning the gaps in the panels. If it's impossible to do then just make them larger panels with less gaps please.

I still don't like it. It doesn't match the 60's style of the building at all like the old entrance. It really feels kludged in.

The Canada Post site could also be the site jlousa was referring to in the rumours thread (i.e., the 750 foot tower which has since been "chopped down" but supposedly still looks "spectacular").

Prometheus, sounds right to me.
We also haven't heard about the FBC site in a long time either.

I would like to think this doesnt mean the 750 foot tower became a 270 foot tower, but would not at all be surprised if that was the case. Not trying to be negative, I'm sure it will be spectacular even if it doesnt stand out and is sawed off.

the original entrance looked better for the building. sure it wasn't super modern and sleek but the building is old. MIPS is right that it doesn't fit all that well. and a glass awning under a solid awning? an interesting design choice.

anyone have a photo of what it looks like lit up at night?

Why do people like doing additions with silver metal paneling on brutalist concrete buildings?? It looks ridiculous, doesn't match at all. So many other materials could be used that would compliment the concrete exterior. It's like the reno at harbour front. Wtf?

I think the idea of boxy steel and concrete slabs is a thing of the past here. Glass and thin metal structures look "modern" (and it's much cheaper to build) I guess but it's really tacky in a lot of applications.
I'm also still in the dark on why they moved the lobby entrance from the middle of the building to the corner. What happened there besides reorganizing a few ground level suites?
