Shape should exchange a community centre for 20 extra stories on one tower

In all seriousness, a medium-sized community centre would be a great addition to this redevelopment. Since there already is a community centre with a pool nearby (Willingdon) as well one with ice rinks (Bill Copeland) and one with fields (Burnaby Lake Sports Complex) also close by, I think they should be a centre with:

- Basketball court-sized gym
- Weight/cardio room
- Seniors room
- Youth room
- Toddler/young kids room
- 1 large, 2 medium and 2 small multipurpose rooms

That would be more than adequate for the development.

Interesting.

As part of the Rezoning permit application for Aviara The City of Burnaby included a condition:
Quote:
...an amenity bonus....to be collected for the provision of an expansion to the Willingdon Heights Community Centre...
https://burnaby.civicweb.net/Documents/DocumentDisplay.aspx?Id=9164

And now in this posted article, the mayor
Quote:
...said attempting to expand or build on the site of the existing Willingdon Community Centre at Willingdon Heights Park near Douglas Road and Gilmore Avenue "won't be nearly workable."
Seemed pretty workable before, in conjunction with expanding the park and removing the through Douglas road (and linking 1st Ave with Douglas/Halifax).

What I am figuring out is that those conditions, even though presented as set-in-stone, seem to be pretty flexible. Remember my comment in this thread about the condition in Brentwood Two's application that it be half rental with separate entrances etc like Brentwood One and now they are advertising 563 homes rather than 281 as they were originally.

It would be much better to build the community centre on the Amazing Brentwood site. The city needs to build one just like the one in Edmonds

I agree. I think it's better to put it there where there is already security and easy access to transit. I wasn't pushing for the Willingdon Heights Park location or complaining that it was moved, I just said it is 'interesting' that these development permits seem to be pretty flexible. Everything isn't an argument you know spm2013.

I was at a meeting couple nights ago and mayor Corrigan was there. He talked very highly of this project and he added (if I heard correctly) that Burnaby owns a ribbon of land from lougheed to hastings. And that Burnaby will use this land to connect Brentwood to the Burnaby Heights area including the Eileen Dailly Community Center with some bike/pedestrian trails.

Nice to see work well underway on site. sales underway on the second tower. it will be nice to see who the retail tenants are as we get closer to completion of the retail portion, too bad that won't be until 2018.

Actually the retail portion will be completed in late 2016/early 2017. And the first tower will be completed by the 2nd half of 2017.

I wouldn't say lies, but stretching the truth. It would be great if the retail could open early 2017 but it is my understanding that potential retail tenants are being told the delivery date will most likely be early 2018. and given that larger highrises these days are in the neighbourhood of 36 months (and these are big) that puts delivery of phase I to the end of 2017 at the earliest.

I have a question for those "in the know" about the Brentwood and SOLO district developments:

SOLO and the new Brentwood are kitty-corner across from each other on the intersection of Lougheed Highway and Willingdon Ave. While there are great plans for walkability within each of the two developments taken separately (and, it seems, between Brentwood and Hastings with this new urban trail?), I am wondering how the fux pedestrians are going to go in between the mall/Brentwood towers, the Skytrain station, and SOLO district. Are there any plans for a pedestrian overpass, narrowing of Willingdon, calming of Lougheed, anything like that? My apologies if this has been discussed already in this thread.

I'm also curious about any legit cycling connections possibly being planned in between SOLO/Brentwood and the CVG near McDonalds/Costco.

All that I think can be said for certain is that the new Brentwood development is directly connected to the concourse level of the Brentwood skytrain station, which in turn becomes a pedestrian overpass of the Lougheed. Right now there is just a mangy set of exit stairs, but in the future there will be an elevator and nice stairs like on the north side. One could walk their bike over it if necessary, but one would think the bikes would be happy on the road. In the future there will be a massive development on the south side of the highway (on the car lot property) that will no doubt connect to the overpass as well.

As for an east west connection, slightly enhanced sidewalks and street level crossing is all we really know will happen when both Brentwood and Solo are eventually all completed.

It's just a wide intersection.

Compare to pedestrian crosswalks at Main & Terminal and at Cambie & 41st Ave.

Or even crosswalks across Georgia Street or Pacific Boulevard downtown.

Apparently they have reduced the speed limit along Lougheed Hwy to 50 (or so they say), and future developments, including brentwood and solo, will be improving the lougheed and willingdon frontages to be more pedestrian friendly. Wider sidewalks with separate bike lanes and retail fronting the street. also they are putting in off peak metered parking along Lougheed, similar to the length of broadway. perhaps they should change the name so its not referred to as a HWY anymore. Maybe Lougheed Way???
