So much has happened in the last year at East Village with the bridge opening, with First and Evolution rising from the ground.

Around this time next year (Fall 2015) what do you think East Village will be like?

I think think there will be more people walking around as I'm sure the condos that are under construction right now will completed. National Music Centre will be finishing up hopefully...

What do you guys expect to see or hope to see

I hope that East Village is such a success that the West Village Redevelopment breaks ground by 2020.

I'm looking forward to St. Patrick's Island being a destination for people. The ice rink, beach, etc will all be excellent seasonal hotspots. Not to mention the ease of skipping over to the EV for drinks and eats at the Simmons building

It'll be great to see more of the EV waterfront developed with some new shops plus the riverwalk, island etc. Bonus once the Bosa/Riocan block is complete, and there will be another interesting couple blocks of development around the NMC.

I don't think the EV will have a full neighborhood feel until at lease some of those interior lots are filled as well, prob 6 or 7 years, but the infrastructure/amenities coming are enough to make most neighborhoods envious.

There is a big ad for Slokker-West in today's Herald and they say they are building 965 units in 7 buildings in the EV.

Yes but I didn't know there were going to be so many units. 965 units must be second in number to only Waterfront which is going to have a 1,000 units when finished.

By this time next year, Verve, Hilton, and NCL will be well out of the ground, Pulse and NMC will be getting ready to open, ALT Hotel will be close to excavation, and a couple other projects should be joining it

And of course First, Fuse, Evolution (lowrise), and Simmons will have been open for months

Not to mention the grand puba of the neighbourhood being open... St. Patrick's Island Park

I'm pretty sure that First and Verve together are only around 600 units. So another ~370 would equate to another huge building or two medium sized buildings yet to be proposed. Very exciting

I think London at Heritage Station has them both beat once all 4 towers are built out (over 1300 I think). And don't say it will never happen, I think a DP came in recently for the 2 middle ones.....

I think having Save-On and other stores and services should help sell condos. Hopefully the new towers will be better looking than the existing 2!

First and Fuse are sometime in the spring. Not sure about Pulse.

This picture gives you a general idea as to what Fram+Slokker has proposed for the East Village. First is already shown on there and is well under construction.

Lot 'M' is the RiverHouse Project:

Lot 'Q' is divided into four projects. The first one, now selling is Verve:

My understanding based on conversations with people at the East Village sales centre is that the other three 'Q' parcels will be divided up as follows:

1: Mid Rise Commercial building with main floor retail on the west side of the lot across from Verve. Construction expected slightly after Verve gets going (kinda like how Bosa has phased the taller tower in the Evolution project)
2: High Rise (equal to, or slightly taller than Verve) with sales to begin once Verve is out of the ground.
3: Second Mid Rise building that may either be commercial or residential. Last I heard they still hadn't quite made up their minds.

The last parcel, lot 'N' will be a 8ish story mid rise project and will be the very last project that is developed. This one is expected to be luxury condos and although I haven't seen any renderings for it, the massing model in the East Village sales centre shows it to be very similar in design to RiverHouse (with large terraced balconies overlooking Fort Calgary and the River).

Walked through the East Village yesterday and noticed that they've got the forms up to pour the roof for the top floor of First. Guess that means it's essentially topped out. Great to see the progress being made in the area. Looking forward to seeing Pulse and the EV Hilton rise out of the ground over the next few months!!

Once a homeless shelter, a storied East Village centre could someday play host to the city’s first primary education, residential mixed-use site.

The Calgary Board of Education has convened talks with contractors and members of the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, which is leading the village’s rejuvenation, about the site’s future.

It was originally suppose to house the adult-education Chinook Learning Services program, but damage sustained in the 2013 historic flood threw a wrench into those plans. The CBE now plans to move the Chinook Learning Services program in Tuxedo Park in with the rest of its adult-learning programs at the Viscount Bennett Centre.

Frank Coppinger, the CBE’s superintendent for facilities and environmental services, shed a little light on future plans for Booth at a briefing late last month.

“Our hope is that there would be interest in the developer community to demolish that building, put in underground parking and a combination of an education facility and residential complex on top,” he said at the time.

From 1988 to 2011, the Salvation Army ran the Booth Centre as a homeless shelter with 200 spaces, but, at the time of its closing, it was less than a quarter full.The site was turned over to the CBE and approved for provincial funding to house Chinook Learning in mid-2012.

Neither Coppinger nor Susan Veres, vice-president of marketing and communications for CMLC, could name another site in the city that would be quite like the future Booth Centre.

Veres did say, “the mix of use for East Village is critical.”

“The entire master plan for the community imagines this community as having a range of uses . . . with more uses, come more users, the more people on the streets day and night and it really helps us to establish a healthy community.”
