TTL O&D...46,212.....28,981.....436,520

VISITORS BY CITY OF ORIGIN
..........YYC.....YEG......YVR
PEK.....5,300...2,400...37,300
PVG.....2,200...1,500...48,600
CAN.......700......300....12,200
TTL...10,000...5,000...109,600

**12 months ended June 2012
Based on the Intervistas report to the Province of Alberta in Feb 2013.
At YVR, Sichuan commenced services in June 2012 and China Southern only went to daily in 2013.

Even with the rapid growth being noted, the markets are still quite small.
I would be curious to know what the SE Asia market numbers from Western Canada would be. I imagine a YYC-HKG flight would see a lot of connections to SE Asian destinations. I realize this would impact YVR but I really want to stop the YVR habit. It adds at least 5 hours to any trip to Asia. This December I am flying YYC-NRT-BKK for the first time and am really looking forward to waving out the window at YVR on the way by!

I think a certain Ukrainian plane would dispute that. In any event...

Water cannons in YYC? None of the other special visitors this year got that honour, did they?

How nice of Global to not even mention that Cargolux has been flying this exact airplane here for quite some time.

Do you think AC would jump in with a 788 if Cathay talks ever get serious?
Watched Global news on Saturday morning. Their interview with whom I assume to be a CX Cargo guy mentioned the flight crew were all from Calgary. Not sure if that was the crew that brought her in or the one scheduled to take her to HKG, but a real nice touch in either case.

Roger Millions replied to my picture of CX arriving by saying his neighbour here in town was operating the YYC-HKG flight. He lives here with his family and I assume commutes in his role as a CX pilot.

Many do, my fathers friend from Edmonton works for CX and commutes on his rotations. He used to fly the old Echo Bay 727-100 out of YEG and now flies the 777-300 for CX.

On a polar crossing over the north he sent my dad photos of the old Lupin mine strip as they cruised over.

My coolest CX pilot story was when I was still flight instructing at Calgary Flight. One of my fellow instructors had a buddy flying for them and doing his stint being based in HKG. He came back to Calgary to log some time in one of our planes to keep his Canadian License current. Nothing cooler than seeing a logbook full of A340 flights and then a Cessna 172 going to Beiseker to do circuits!

Who is he on airliners.net?? Edit: akula? Very clever!

That site is more for entertainment than really anything else I guess. Sometimes there is relevant information like flyertalk. I quit it a long time ago... reading all the false info is such a joke. And the Australian threads get embarrassing from time to time as well!

Unfortnunately that info isn't readily available. But I will guess travel to SE Asia from Western Canada isn't that huge.

All I have is Stats Canada figures about different visible minority groups that at least gives some sort of a picture for VFR stats.

Asian populations as at 2011. Since then, of course, all 3 of YVR, YYC and YEG have seen increased immigration.

........................YYC.........YEG........YVR
Chinese..............75,470....51,600...411,470
South Asian........84,900....61,100...252,400 (Indian, Pakistani etc) (YVR increases to 284,600 if you include YXX)
Filipino...............49,500....39,900...112,090 (YWG is 56,700)
SE Asian.............21,730....16,300....44,200 (Vietnamese, Malay etc)
West Asian..........8,500......6,800.....37,000 (Iranian, Afghani etc)
Korean................8,500......4,800.....48,400
Japanese.............5,400......2,700.....28,300

As for travel market size - other Asian countries based on the Intervistas report
12 months ended June 2012.

VISITORS
Japan...............34,200.....3,600.....91,000
South Korea......12,500.....2,400.....56,400
Taiwan...............1,300........500.....32,600
India..................8,100.....4,600.....21,400
UAE...................1,800........700.......2,200

TTL O&D
Japan................60,300....11,400....257,800
South Korea.......22,700.....10,900...192,349
Taiwan................6,400.......2,900...131,100
India.................53,100.....35,000...165,000
UAE..................10,100.......5,000.....10,900

So the problem with any direct flights to Asia, the further south and west you go the more markets are "lost," at least geographically. That's why airports such as NRT and PEK make the most sense... for now at least.

A lot of what I know about avionics and airline operations in general I learned from airliners.net and it let me cruise through school at the top of my class. For me this can't be understated.

I get that the speculation there runs rampant but underneath the garbage, years ago it seemed a few folks knew what they were talking about, specifically in tech/ops.

Yup from an observer's standpoint I get all that :-)

But stopped being a paying customer years ago hated getting involved in petty arguments and having posts deleted because of quoting from "other" sites despite seeing plenty of other posts with quotes from similar sites... the monitors were so inconsistent. Non paying sites are just as much fun!

No I didn't. It was more in response to some questions/discussions in this forum. Basically putting some perspective on where future Asian flights might go based on recent demographic and O&D stats. Feel free to copy it over if you want!

Thanks for providing that breakdown. I would be even more interested in the size of the market for Canadians travelling to SE Asia. I have been going to the region for 20 years and there are increasing numbers of passengers originating in YYC and connecting in YVR to any number of SE Asian destinations.

I would imagine that immigration numbers are by far the biggest driver though. I have observed over the years that when you travel from Canada to Asia most of the passengers are of Asian decent. This contrasts with travelling from Europe to Asia where the majority of the passengers are of European decent travelling for holidays!

Sure thing.

Yeah I'd love to know all sorts of market information. It's there somewhere I'm sure but a) gave up looking and/or b) I'm too cheap to pay for it.

Anecdotally of course.... I go to SE Asia 4-6 times per year... Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia mainly. It helps Singapore is only a 7 hour flight from MEL. I am not kidding but I have yet to run into a fellow Canadian! Plenty of fellow Aussies, Americans, Brits etc... Off to Singapore and Vietnam again soon before the trek back to N.A. for Xmas.

I rarely fly to Canada or the US via Asia anymore but yeah when I did lots of Asians on the transpacific portions. And those Europe to Asia flights with all the Europeans... Listen to a lot of their accents and I'll bet you will hear lots of Aussies returning from Europe on the infamous "Kangaroo Route."

YUL just posted their August pax stats.

Their Aug growth of 6.2% edged YYC at 5.8%.

YTD though YYC is still about 140,000 more pax total.... will the gap narrow? Stay tuned!
