Yeah, nothing to go nuts over in that article.

Still I'd love a HKG non-stop from YYC. I've always wanted to visit there since I was a kid, I'd probably book a trip there with the flight in a heartbeat if it came to fruition with either CX or AC.

Direct to HK would be nice, but to be honest, I don't mind having to stop in Vancouver. I've done it a few times, and to me it's not a big deal. I'd rather have more direct flights from Calgary to eastern U.S. destinations like Atlanta or Miami.

Having a direct, it's about business and tourism for us too though.

Miami was tried by WestJet last winter and was cut after one season. Possibly and I say that with caution AA could eventually try the market as they are slowly expanding the MIA hub and could offer onward connections.

Stop the Vancouver habit.

I was sent this pretty sweet picture of YYC. No idea where it came from though.

Both tried, both failed.

How about direct HKG-YYC-ATL service? a la CX's HKG-YVR-JFK. (ATL is also without service to HKG.)

Kill two birds with one stone + we get widebody service to the US - heck they could even throw some cargo on it!

On a serious note, are YVR & YYC the two largest airports in N.A. without year-round, regular service to ATL? (and MIA for that matter)?

I believe that they are, YVR has had ATL on it's wish list for sometime but DL has been hesitant to launch more than seasonal service.

One would think with proper timing (and flights) the route would work basically being DL's Houston (UA) and Dallas (AA). Lots of connectivity at that airport but no joy to convince them.

MIA on the other hand is strong connection point for flights to central and South America and is a huge AA hub for that purpose. But again no commitment for the route by the airline for the route. Yes you would get vacationers aswell but they're are warmer climates easily available in the winter months since MIA can fluctuate a lot during the winter for temperatures.

The Cathay Pacific Cargo 747-800F is scheduled to arrive here at 0900 tomorrow am. This will be the inaugural flight of the 2x weekly YYC-HKG cargo service.

The airport authority twitter folks says it WILL land 17R/35L, however it is coming from JFK so I'll most likely wait and listen to what runway ATC gives them.

cyeg66, any info you can share on that front?

Nope, other than the fact it'll land 17R or 35L, that's all that's certain so far. I work in the am so I'll try to give you a more exact eta.

It was just the choice of the western runway despite the JFK arrival that was confusing me. I'll be up and at work by 0630 so plenty of time to keep an eye on the eta and such. If it ends up too late I'll have to bug out though. 1000 is my "no go" time.

Of course feel free to keep me in the loop.

Now wouldn't this be something else!

3 or 4 weekly A350 flight would be my guess if it happens. However if we get a mainland China flight before 2016, then I would guess CX would shy away from starting YYC-HKG.
HOLYCRAP!!!!! I will have a TRAVELGASM if this is true!!!!!!!!

You'll love HK if you go. I went there 6 times already and it always has and still is my favourite place to visit. I guess I'm lucky then, I'm still technically a "kid".

Concur. Truly unique place and still is. That's the great thing about Asia so many amazing places with unique character. HKG is right up there.

I frequented HKG when I was a loyal Oneworlder. Chek Lap Kok is fantastic too but nothing compares to the old Kai Tak though. Ahhhh nostalgia!

I always wanted to experience the Kai Tak landing but too bad I was born a year after they moved to Chek Lap Kok though. It is still a magnificent experience nonetheless. Love HKG! (I think I am talking too much about HKG in a YYC forum, sorry)

AC upgauging LHR effective 24 Jan

AC was going to be flying the 763 for the entire winter.

However, AC has just switched to a daily 333 effective 24 January for the remainder of winter and spring until flipping back to the 77W for the summer 2015 scheds on the 1st of May.

Excellent. AC has been kind to us, haven't they? This is at least a 54 seat upguage depending on which fin they send us, for about 3,000 additional int'l seats each way vs the same period last winter as LHR didn't upguage till mid-March to the 333, if I remember correctly.

Of note is that it's two days after FRA goes to 333 from 77L, though that swap is currently scheduled to take place on this end instead of at FRA so I expect that to change.
