Lockheed Martin to Camden?

Quote:
The New Jersey Economic Development Authority is to vote Tuesday on whether to award $100.7 million in tax credits over 10 years to the defense contractor to operate in Camden City. Lockheed Martin has local headquarters in Moorestown and an advanced-technology laboratory in Cherry Hill.

Make no mistake about it: Grow New Jersey Assistance Grant is so far shaping up to be absolutely amazing for Philly. Sure, we lost our subsidized Sixers practice facility to an even more heavily subsidized one in Camden, but everyone in the city should welcome with open arms New Jersey taxpayers paying companies to locate their businesses to within a stone's throw of Philly. All those employees within a 10 minute PATCO ride of Philly means not just a stronger Camden, but a boost to Philly as well.

It looks like AQ Rittenhouse at 2017-21 Chestnut is just about topped off.

I also got a rather desperate sounding email from 2116 Chestnut offering a free month's rent if I came for an appointment. After seeing the floor plans for those units I cannot believe the highway robbery they are charging for rent. Cramped units with lots of weird corners and structural columns in the middle of your space.

Whatever Brandywine was doing at 20th and Market seems to have stopped. The equipment is gone and the giant pile of dirt has been flattened out.

This would be pretty damn awesome. Would it be the Lockheed Martin now based just outside of Los Angeles? Could be a ton of jobs coming.

I doubt it would be their corporate headquarters. More likely just some or all of this (from the same article):

Quote:

as evidenced by this statement:

Quote:
Keith Little, public relations manager for Lockheed Martin, also would not release details, saying in an e-mail only that "we're committed to maintaining a strong presence in New Jersey and look forward to continuing our work with the EDA."

Well then, that's slightly disappointing. There probably won't be much of a change in where people live. We will probably only see a drastic difference if they create new jobs.

I would assume most people would just stay in their current place of residence in South Jersey. Some younger employees may move to the city, but I couldn't imagine it having a huge impact.

It could help with future recruiting, if they're looking for younger techie types who would prefer to live in Center City or surrounding neighborhoods.

Also, I'd be very surprised if the ongoing urban renaissance in Philly doesn't eventually make its way to Camden. The proximity to Center City, the fantastic riverfront locations and views--there's just too much potential, in my opinion, for it not to happen, and it will be a real waste if it doesn't. Now, if you and I could just scrape together a few billion to get the ball rolling.

More on Lockheed Martin

Philadelphia Business Journal claims Lockheed occupies 2.64 million square feet in South Jersey, and 2.19 million square feet in Central Jersey. If they consolidate all of their operations into one location in Camden, that will be nearly 5 million square feet of office space for them in Camden.

NOW THAT WOULD BE SIGNIFICANT.

I think you may have misread that. It states that they have 2.64 million square feet in the PA suburbs, and 2.19 million square feet in both South and Central Jersey, for a total of 4.8 million square feet in PA and NJ:

Quote:
The company takes up 4.8 million square feet of leased and owned space between the two states and it’s nearly evenly split between the two. In the Philadelphia suburbs, it occupies 2.64 million square feet and 2.19 million square feet in both South Jersey and Central Jersey.
It's understandable that you misread it, since there probably should be another comma between "2.64 million square feet" and "and 2.19 million square feet in both South Jersey and Central Jersey."

Why is that typed so absolutely confusingly. It doesn't even make sense. It makes it sound like South Jersey (Cherry Hill and Moorestown) are not a part of the Philadelphia Suburbs lol. It also claims Moorestown to be Central Jersey then when it is not lol.

Just a poorly worded paragraph.

Even so, 2.19 million square feet of office space to Camden would be pretty significant. That's about the square footage of office space of both Comcast Towers combined.

You're right--very poorly written, and confusing.

I suspect that "Philadelphia suburbs" was supposed to be "Pennsylvania suburbs," and that's how I actually read it! And of course, Cherry Hill and Moorestown are ALSO Philadelphia suburbs, and NEITHER is in Central Jersey by anyone's definition.

How does a company going to Camden help Philly? Just curious.

A few hundred jobs moving closer to the city just across the river a few subway stops away from Center City? Yeah, it can certainly be beneficial for the city.

However, since they would most likely just be consolidating from Cherry Hill and Moorestown, I don't foresee it having much of an impact, but with all these just being closer to the city, with a shorter commute, especially with great public transit access to it, I could see some people choosing to move to Center City, especially younger employees. However, I would assume most would just choose to stay where they are currently living.

Now if it was a new company moving from out of the area to Camden, I could see that being much more beneficial for the city.

Philly has it's Cambridge in University City

I think Camden would be more like a Jersey City or Hoboken if it is able to gentrify.
