Been getting spoiled with so many cool looking projects, particularly in the EV, recently this one underwhelmed .. But it the materials are good for this one it will still be a very solid addition to the area

Still sceptical about these hotel proposals actually getting started but the Hilton gives me some hopes that we'll see some of them get built relatively soon

I think it is actually worse than mediocre - and that means I particularly don't like that it is on the river walk.

BTW - if you were on that lot today, what decent restaurant options would you have in a 4-block radius?

Currently there are none in a 4 block radius I think. However, there will be two opening up in the Simmons building by next summer and I think one in Evolution too.

Yes though, I agree the design is less than mediocre. Absolutely disappointing. Usually ALT Hotel designs try to be a bit fun and whacky while still maintaining a spartanness to them, this one is just spartan and awful.

Ah yes - the Simmons building will be key, and then presumably this hotel will also have a restaurant.

Restaurants are those chicken and eggs things. You have to build the larger anchors and they will come, I suppose.

Yes. Evolution and First, with about 1000 people between them, will be more than anchor enough for a restaurant. Not to mention the high traffic that Riverwalk already generates.

While I agree that materials will play a big role (they pretty much always do!), the overall design of this does look a little mailed-in regardless of that.

The design momentum built up in East Village has raised expectations, and this dosn't look up to par any more. A little surprising considering that Le Germain is behind it....but this rendering also looks like a first-draft, so I guess we'll see.

Alt Hotels is a budget brand. That's the nicest looking one I've seen. Mind you the rest are all pretty much copies of the first one anchoring a suburban mall in Montreal.

The Winnipeg one looks a little more interesting.

Overall, I'm glad it's a more budget oriented hotel. I know everyone gets excited over the high-end hotels, but these are the ones I can actually recommend to visitors with a real-world budgets when they come to Calgary. These types of hotels also tend to get younger visitors, who lets face it, will add to the atmosphere of the east village much more than just another polo-wearing oil jockey coming in for a conference.

I'm not sure what affordable hotel within the Calgary context means. $99 within an EV context? I doubt it.

That Alt Hotel proposal is pretty boring. AS has been mentioned, the materials could save it if they are quality. Some slate or stone tile would look pretty good, though it will probably be stucco.

We're not talking about a Travelodge that hasn't been renovated since the 1990s. It's a good quality brand with great amenites. It just isn't luxury at $250 a night.
