interesting how Toronto's streetcar ridership is plummeting, down 12% this quarter. I wonder if the TTC is failing to put out streetcars given their age, and delays in the new streetcars delivery is meaning that streetcar capacity is simply going down. no way that 12% drop is driven by actual demand drops.

based on a conversation in another thread, I thought I would create a map of the TTC network today, funded, and future.

Yellow = Subway line
Thick Blue = Grade Separated LRT line
Thin Blue = Surface LRT line
Red = Streetcar line with its own right of way

Today: Queens Quay streetcar line shut down for reconstruction. SRT on last legs. Union station second platform just opened.



Tomorrow: (well, 2023ish) Spadina subway, Scarborough subway, Small new streetcar ROWs (Queensway ROW extended slightly due to a track rebuild, new Cherry street line), Eglinton LRT, Sheppard LRT, Finch LRT. Total cost to upgrade network to this from today: roughly $14.5 billion.



Future: This is what I feel will be funded with the $15 billion GTA fund that was in the spring budget. This isn't formal yet as Metrolinx still has to decide on what exactly to build, but this would provide the biggest bang for the buck in Toronto and just so happens to be politically appealing subways. Included is the Yonge line extension by 2 stops to Steeles to provide a better end of the line crossover to allow for higher frequencies, and the DRL. Total cost: roughly $4 billion.

What I find interesting in the new APTA numbers is Canada now has a new listing to the nation's 4th busiest transit system...........Brandon Transit is now carrying 701,000 passengers a day, That's decent ridership in a city of 45,000.

They also seem to have screwed up Denver LRT numbers because now that the new West LRT has opened it has ridership down 27%.

I really would not read too much into the APTA numbers. Wait for proper ridership numbers from the respective transit agencies.

Here is a stats rundown from that report, up until 2012.

Between 2007 - 2012
Per capita ridership in major metropolitan centers grew from about 100 to 120 trips per capita.

Per capita ridership in large cities held steady and went up and down slightly around the 80 trips per capita mark.

It should be noted that Canada's country wide mode share for work trips by transit has risen from about 10% to 12%. Canada's transit mode share for work trips is about equal to the mode share of transit for work trips in France. By contrast only 5% of commuters take transit to work in the USA.

The person with the Metrolinx communications department needs to ditch instagram and just use a regular camera app.

That said, it's pretty exciting to see the train in the station at last.

Metrolinx Flickr comes out with clean, "normal" photos all the time. The Instagram account is just that, an instagram account. Filters included.

A map showing the primary RT corridors of Saskatoon. The city is pushing very hard for the implementation of BRT, and I believe they are beginning to reserve ROWs for their future LRT network.

Trying to out do Kitchener, as the smallest city in the country with a rail-based rapid transit system?

By the time that is up and running, I have a feeling, Saskatoon would have passed Kitchener-Waterloo in population anyways.

No, they are only implementing BRTs at present. With their current population of 310 000, I doubt they will be implementing LRT until they are 500 000 or more (sometime in the 2030s).

I find it slightly terrifying that the 407-400 highway interchange there seems nearly as large as Toronto's CBD.
