^ The flame war in the comments of that BlogTO post is kind of sad. I guess it's ok that some people see a great event like supercrawl and the first thing that comes to mind is how much Hamilton sucks. It might stop us from gentrifying too fast.

The value of the commentary on media and alternative-media articles seems to decline more and more over time.

Not worth equating to reality most of the time.

It's pretty easy to counter each and every one of those slams with Rob Ford anyway. Toronto has far bigger issues to contend with than slamming Hamilton.

Noticed the lot being ripped up on the site of the old Zellers at James N & King William. Anyone know what's up?

Not sure I agree with this. It is 'hip', but i wouldn't agree that young suburbanites are driving attendance.

Office space vacancy in Hamilton’s downtown hits lowest rate in five years: city report

http://www.thespec.com/news-story/487808...s-lowest-rate-in-five-years-city-report/

The downtown office vacancy rate has fallen to its lowest rate since the city began tracking employment numbers in 2010.

There was 613,790 square feet of office space available in the core in June, for an 11.8 per cent vacancy rate. That fell from 13 per cent last year and 15.2 per cent in 2009.

Empty floors in the Stelco Tower account for one-third of the vacant space. Without that building in the mix, the overall vacancy rate would be 8.4 per cent.

The city also tracked vacancies in storefront commercial and office units and found 16 per cent were empty, a small decline from 17 per cent in 2013.

Along with less empty space, there are now 24,700 jobs within the downtown area, an increase of 250 positions over 2013. About three-quarters of the jobs are full time.

The top three downtown employment sectors are government, professional/scientific and retail/entertainment.

A staff report to council this week said new office occupants tend to come to Hamilton for lower lease rates and employers are finding the city's quality of life and real estate affordability are helping with employee retention.

The Downtown Hamilton Urban Growth Centre stretches from Queen Street to Victoria Avenue and Hunter Street to Cannon Street, and includes James Street North to the CN Railway and south to Charlton Avenue.

Sadly it was just a quick parking lot repaving job.
The Zeller's building was allowed to be torn down ca. 1988 because the owner promised to build a new and better building in its place... still waiting.

Wow, visited Hamilton/Mac for the first time in 7 years for homecoming over the weekend and couldn't believe how much the city has changed! James St is looking just fabulous, especially the renovated building at King William. The boom on Main St is also really awesome and exciting! Looking forward to seeing even more changes next time I'm back!

Try make it for an art crawl along James St N. It happens the 2nd Friday of every month. Great vibe.

123 James North has begun bricking the front of the building along James. The old Leon Furs building reveals it's gorgeous new floor to ceiling glass storefront. The old BMO on James Street that received a facelift becomes Jason Farr's campaign office. The James North GO station's steel structure rises above the MacNab street bridge. 150 Main West gets windows, and Bella Tower nearly matches it's height at a soaring 13 floors. McMaster's downtown campus get's its green cladding, and the large glass atrium at the front begins installation.

Busy week in construction. Guess everyone is buckling down before it gets cold.

Looks great. Next step is to get the Poulette bridge rebuilt...

I really like this rebuild, but personally find the lighting to be self-consciously old-timey in contrast to the clean and relatively modern aesthetic of the bridge, as if they just had some spare standards lying around that would defray capital costs. (Judging from the night photo, the City's "illuminated" promise is also little premature.)

Would be great to have the Poulette bridge back in action, as well as a restored Ray.

Wow. Too bad. On the other hand, the landlord hasn't had a tenant in there for so long.
