Don't forget the pedestrian bridge that the City is apparently building over the O-Train line - linking Hickory to Adelade (or Adeline). So the Icon and Champagne won't be far apart at all.

Any knowledge if they'll widen this sidewalk, maybe for Vibe? It's really cramped and not safe with cars zooming by.

Carling is overbuilt in that area... it could easily be narrowed from 6 lanes to 4 east of Holland with minimal traffic impact. It already effectively narrows from 6 to 4 east of Booth due to the bus lanes there and that merge never really creates problems. Whenever the city gets around to resurfacing that segment of Carling they should look at chopping off the outside lanes there and using the space to widen the sidewalk and add segregated bike lanes.

^ Yes... a line of bushes and trees along the median would be a real nice addition.

Instead of cutting back lanes, wouldn't it be faily easy just to extend the sidewalk a couple of feet over the Otrain track? I mean.. I don't think it would cost millions, it's not like building a new bridge.

I believe this is the general plan, though I don't think any design work has been done. There is definitely room for bike lanes, and Carling is clearly overbuilt in that stretch.

I don't think trees on the boulevard are possible, as I gather the City won't plant trees that close to an arterial. Which is too bad, as trees would be great there.

Trees between the sidewalk and the road is much better than trees on a median in my opinion. One helps create a barrier between people and cars, the other doesn't really do anything. (Also the former provides shade for people. Though that might scare some folks in Ottawa.)

What I would love to see eventually is for the bridge to be completely rebuilt so that a station could be integrated underneath it and a continuous pathway link as well, like this:

This would make it a good train/bus transfer hub

There is a Public Realm plan for the area that includes plans for Carling...

This is a very good idea, IMO.

I am fully in support of that idea.

Claridge via twitter is commenting "last chance for pre construction prices"

So I checked Neil Malhotra's twitter feed and he states in response to reidjr that construction will in fact start late fall of this year

Totally agree, this is hopefully going to set new standards in Ottawa. Kudos to Claridge for having the balls to propose and actually confirm construction on something taller than 27 floors. This may be the beginning of a new era here when people see that Ottawa is still alive after a 45 floor building stands in this city.

Exactly. I feel future tall projects will go more smoothly and sell much better once the masses recognize that tall buildings don't always result in the deaths of young children and looming shadows sweeping across large swaths of the city.

I am pretty sure the lack lustre sales does not have anything to do with the height. In fact I think people generally prefer to be higher. It is the neighbours that oppose height. Icon has struggled because of general market malaise and the neighborhood is not as desirable as Westboro or the Market. (but priced about the same).

Do you think that the knocking down of a local eyesore -- the Agriculture building -- has improved sales? There is a new, smaller eyesore being built at Dow's Lake -- the HMCS Carleton building. And the Dow's Lake Paviliion is in need of a refresh.

The Carling building as an eyesore is a bit of a subjective statement. I agree with you, in my opinion it was hideous, but there's a lot of people who disagree. Architecture is inherently subjective.

I'd have to disagree with you here. I live in the area, so I am a bit bias, but I think Little Italy has become one of the most desirable neighbourhoods in Ottawa. Close to transit, close to Dows Lake, lots of shops, lots of restaurants. Now we just need a decent grocery store!
