He's only normal if by "normal person" you mean, "an idiot" (which, yeah, I guess is pretty normal).

But otherwise, he's been in politics for 14 years, has a multi-million dollar business that was handed down to him & his siblings by his father - who was also a well-connected politician before him, and he smokes crack and associates with criminals. Doesn't exactly sound like the average Toronto lifestyle, does it?

So true yet people go on about how normal he is... I think it's his argument style and the way he tries to frame his points, tied into his image as a bald overweight middle aged dude. People buy into the package they see but are too stupid to look into it more.

Why the hell do people find the idea of putting an "average joe" in positions of power appealing anyway? Personally I want the people at the helm of our society and its various levels of government to be the smartest and most competent people we can find.

But I'm happy to have average joe re-shingle the house or sell me a beer.

I don't think even Rob Ford's supporters or even Doug's think of either of them as "average Joes"........everyone knows they are very wealthy and well connected. It's not so much they are average Joes as much as people like Chow aren't.

Chow irks people because she comes across as arrogant and she knows what's best for the "little people". She is the patrician and the masses of plebians need her help so she so gracefully decided to help bring them to the promised land.

People dislike their arrogant politicians enough as it is and knowing that one would sooner give up her yearly subscription to the Canadian Ballet rather than have to step foot in a Tim Horton's, rubs people the wrong way. They may have a true understanding of the issues and some very good ideas to have to deal with them. They may be very empathetic and want to bring out positive change and feel good about that at the end of the day so they can make that cocktail party in Yorkville.

Mr Tory who, like nearly all politicians, is wealthy, doesn't have that air of arrogance about him. Tory and Ford, unlike Chow, don't give the impression that they would need an emergency limo to her therapist if you suggested that you meet at the Keg for dinner.

Tory comes across as a pretty likable kind of guy whether you agree with his politics or not. Chow, whether you like her policies or not, comes across as arrogant and superficial.

In short, Tory comes across as the type of person you could go to a hockey game with and Chow comes across as someone you would go to a new art exhibition with to see more ugly modern art as she sits there and pretends to "interpret" it for you.

Doug Ford, despite his incompetence, comes across as being more "average" in the way Tory does. This is why they are doing well and Chow is sinking fast.

You are confused. Chow is a first generation immigrant and her background is decidedly middle class, though aspirational. Tory is of the elite, but is certainly the one I would be voting for, if only to keep Doug Ford out of the position. To call Ford "average" is setting the bar very low indeed. That family seems to exist in a category of its own, perhaps best labelled as wealthy trailer trash.

I wonder if Rob Ford will stay in the City Council race if this week's prognosis turns out to be very bad? Not wishing for that, obviously, but one wonders.

Come to Northern Ontario... It's literally common practice here, especially on reserves.

Thunder Bay's last Rob Ford style mayor now lives in the US, he refers to his time here as "The Bad Years". He was so corrupt that a country in Florida fired him as its chief executive. He almost went to prison.

That may be true, but he was referring to Chow's image. From where I sit, I also sense a "superficial" vibe from Chow that I don't get from the other candidates.

Speaking strictly in terms of image, John Tory has probably the best-crafted and most broadly appealing one out of all the major candidates. He comes from a blue-blood old-money family and is quite wealthy and obviously well-connected (not to mention highly competent and capable), yet he has a certain approachability that in no way comes across as contrived or condescending. There is a real honesty to his persona... he doesn't try to pretend he is some lunch-bucket guy like the Fords, but being a scion of a famous legal family doesn't define him completely either.

Chow may, but I get the impression that there is a bit of confusion with Adrienne Clarkson and Olivia Chow. Olivia Chow is certainly more grounded than Clarkson, but the circles she travels in is not as broad and deep as it should be when in it comes to running for mayor.

These two Fords have the same greasy hair. Blonde and slippery.

^I chalk it down to similar diet, genetics, and aggressive personalities.

As Jack Woltz said: I don't care how many...greaseball goombahs come out of the woodwork
