This image is from the GMIA Twitter feed, and is a nice aerial shot showing the airport on the edge of town, and it's relationship to the two divided highways in the area (TCH#2 and NB#15). You can see how the newly lengthened 06/24 runway almost touches the TCH.

I hadn't realized that the neighborhood just West of Harrisville Blvd had grown so much. It almost stretches from the TCH to the Veterans Highway now...

The area around St. John's International is really growing! they have opened World Parkway as new access to the airport and they have started ground work for the massive terminal extension. Also, the Holiday Inn Express at the airport looks like it has it's foundation or is ready for pouring. The airport now has multiple roads and is being built up all around with the hotel, terminal expansion and industrial roads. outside the airport itself, the commercial shopping area of Hebron Way just off of the Stavanger Dr. shopping district is popping up with a huge Canadian Tire, multiple office buildings and food establishments. It's kind of weird how our airport is actually IN the city and will soon be actually surrounded by development, I find that uncommon in many many cities especially in cities that are under 1.5 mil. I'll take pics next time I'm on that side of town!

Maybe someone can help me out on this one. I recently found out that Kelowna Flightcraft was unsuccessful in retaining the Purolator contract and CargoJet has been awarded it, effective March 2015. All this happened in February of this year. KF flies in their 727's twice daily Monday til Friday (no evening flights from here Friday night). My question is; are both flights for Purolator? as one of the loads at the FedEx terminal here in Moncton. A few years back FedEx lost a contract either to Purolator or KF for hauling DHL?? if i'm not mistaken. I was just wondering if we will lose both 727's or will it only be one of them as the one 727 will continue to load at the FedEx. I certainly hope that's the case, Cargojet has already phased out the ole sleek freighter in favour of the 757
Both KF and CargoJet have the announcementals of the Purolator / Canada Post contract on their websites.

I would imagine that the tonnage flowing through the airport will remain the same regardless of who the carrier is. Perhaps the Purolator business will use the CargoJet 757, which would actually be a step up; wouldn't it be?

Thought I would do a comparison of some Atlantic Canadian airports, courtesy of Google Earth:

Halifax

St. John's (NL)

Moncton

Fredericton

Saint John (NB)

Charlottetown

Sydney

^^ nice. See how St. John's International is being swallowed by the city? haha

This is the plan for the Airport, so it's only going to develop more and more, not to mention the other private developments going on just outside the airport.

As an insider I can't divulge 100% of my knowledge but here is a summary:

Puro used to carry UPS on their aircraft here...not anymore. They still carry Canada Post however (both government owned in a way). DHL never flew with FedEx, we only carry our own stuff. CargoJet currently flies UPS freight around these parts.

Puro has decided to contract out its flight operations as it was way too costly (maintenance) to keep their own fleet...They are not able to purchase newer aircraft at this time either...the reasons for that part I wont comment on for aforementioned reasons.

The new arrangement will see CargoJet carrying pretty much everyone but us (FedEx). So Canada Post, Puro and UPS...I dont know if they carry any DHL but they likely do.

You can guess I'm sure this would be impossible with a single 757 so they will have to step up to at least a 767 I'd say.

Our ramp will be a lot quieter with the loss of the noisy ol Puro 727s...

So Fedex and UPS can't fly there own metal between two Canadian points and pickup/drop freight, they must contract out correct?

Re-posting this from Halifax Stanfield thread, thought the rest of Atlantic Canada might find this interesting.

An Airbus A380 Air France Flight 006 from CDG to YFK diverted to Halifax Stanfield today.

This is the first time the massive A380 had landed and departed Halifax Stanfield.

Why was it diverted?

That's right...we use Morningstar, we are essentially their only contract though and the 757s look almost identical to their American counterparts. Just a Canadian regulatory issue prevents us from having our own planes for Canadian domestic operation.

UPS uses CargoJet but they contract for many customers (about to be more as well). so their planes are done in CargoJet livery not UPS or anything else.

Great.... so all CargoJet needs to do is buy a 777F or 747-8F and life will be good...... hehehe

I liked MonctonRad's photo comparison of the major Atlantic airports, so I thought I'd throw in a comparison of Newfoundland and Labrador's "major" airports. I left out St. John's since the earlier post took care of that one.

Wabush (Labrador City)

Airport-Wabush

Gander

Airport-YQX

Stephenville

Airport-YJT

Deer Lake

Airport-YDF

Goose Bay

Airport-GooseBay

Happy 20th Birthday to Cargo Airlines newest aircraft.

Not neccessarily an airport topic but...For CYQM it involves a scheduled airline.
It does sound funny but, it may be worth the mention that Cargo Airlines newest Boeing 747-400 (4X-ICB) which made its debut appearance here on the 21st of September. It has now reached 20 years of age...delivered as Singapore Airlines on this date September 29, 1994. There was no flight this weekend from Moncton but on Saturday from JFK back to Liege. I haven't seen the Boeing 747-200 (4X-ICO) in nearly a week. Being painted or maintenance possibly? I'm looking forward in seeing either one of these in a Cargo Airlines scheme. Also waiting to see their 4th Boeing 747..2nd 747-400.

@Trevor3

Yes, I should have included some other NL airports in my comparison, I should have known (given their military and/or trans Atlantic history) that the airports in Gander, Stephenville and Goose Bay would have been bad-🞵🞵🞵.

My bad…..
