34 x 166 = 5,644 available seats. Total passengers carried during July was 4,978. 4,978 divided by 5,644 = 0.88, so the load factor was 88%
I believe they (Allegiant) are using their B752 as well on this route...

Flight aware tells you what aircraft is used for each flight.

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAY453/history

I can only go back 4 months, but every flight since May 9 has been an MD80.

Allegiant utilizes its B752 on the route every Sunday.

Per Flightaware, since May 9th, they have not used a 757 to Austin at all. Not able to go further back so it's possible they did before that date.

Of course, Flightaware has been known to be inaccurate so who knows.

There is a lot of traffic between Austin and Las Vegas. The Southwest direct flights (there are 3 daily) always are full. I'm surprised Southwest hasn't done anything to combat Allegiant on the route, it's pretty direct competition. Southwest could crush them on that route if they wanted.

Man our airport is really taking off.. (parden my pun)

There is no doubt ABIA is becoming the 3rd main airport in Texas, there is no sign of a slowdown in fact it looks more like growth is speeding up.

Sorry for quoting a post from so long ago but I was checking out the airport master plan (and drooling over the possible outcomes I imagined) when I noticed this on Figure 7-2 of the Airport Master Plan

Honestly if it gets built tall enough it'll have an even better view than it would if it were on the infill site if you ask me.

Austin is currently ahead of Hobby and Love based on YTD numbers. We'll see if it holds up!

Hobby is at 11M passengers per year right now (just over ABIA), and it's growing steadily, but I think ABIA will eventually pass it due to more significant expansion.

ABIA is already ahead of Love which will see a post-Wright bump for sure... but again, without gate expansion it will probably remain behind Austin at least in the long term. Also, with the new routes from Love, presumably some of the intrastate routes might go away in exchange for more profitable ones from major carriers. So unless Love already has 20-30% unused capacity, I'm not sure it will ever surpass Austin, even with the Wright amendment going away.

So "3rd main airport in Texas" seems like a reasonable statement.

I think what was meant was like "main" as in "principal/flagship" airport serving a metropolitan area" so "With significantly more traffic than smaller airports similar to IAH versus HOU, DFW versus DAL"

I hope that made sense, and I could be dead-wrong but I've had a long day

You hit the hammer on the nail. When I said main airport, I meant the principal airport serving the region. While Dallas Love and Houston Hobby are good sized airport's, they are not the main airports such as DFW and Houston Intercontinental. At least in my opinion, I consider Love and Hobby secondary airports.

On a side note, looks like it's been a pretty hectic day at the airport with the small plane crash earlier and the emergency landing of a Delta plane.

Frankly I'm not surprised regarding the Delta plane, their Embraers are really unreliable in my experience.

Today was just hectic in general with the I-35 thing, the small plane crash, resulting 3 acre brush fire, then the Delta flight...

All of these incidences made me wonder how prepared ABIA is for a major situation (hope we never have to deal with such a scenario). I'm sure they are as prepared as any.

Goldenboot, I saw your post in the Memphis thread. You mentioned that Lufthansa was in talks with ABIA officials, which we had heard eabout earlier in the year. My question is when you said a route to Asia, did you refer to Lufthansa providing that direct flight or is another carrier interested in adding an Asian route?

It was the Nashville thread...BA may be eying BNA as a possible expansion route.

Austin1971, a while back, mentioned Lufthansa and an Asian airline may have approached ABIA with very preliminary inquiries into the possibility of beginning non-stop service to Germany and Asia. As was discussed at that time, don't expect anything to happen or be announced until the current expansion projects are complete (if at all). However, I do expect more non-stop transcontinental routes to be announced in Austin's near future (next 5-10 years).

In that same post, Austin1971 also mentioned that a Canadian airline, or two, have been in touch with ABIA officials...

Opps I meant Nashville don't know why I put Memphis. Guess since they are both in Tennessee, I just mixed them up lol.

While I'm sure other cities will be getting BA routes, even with the more cost effective Dreamliners, I doubt there will be tons of cities that will be getting a direct route to London. Too many options of direct flights would shrink the demand depending on how close the cities being served are to each other.

Another thought is despite market research some cities may end up not bringing the numbers that would make it worth having a route. Austin is lucky for several reasons and our route is in terms of percentage from what I remember mentioned on here or maybe was on one of the airline forums, the highest in the nation. I think other cities are looking at our success although that does not mean they will see the same kind of success.
