^ It would be lovely if the city took the money from the naming rights and finished replacing the seats in that building. It's the only arena I know of where they replaced half of eight sections before reaching the conclusion that was good enough.

The areas you describe are the club section, which is why the seats were replaced. Those seats also get 'waiter' service.

SASKATOON - In May of this year I was pleasantly surprised by new businesses and cool restaurants in Edmonton in my first visit in a couple years.

This time, I made my first ever touch down (pardon the Riders speak) in Saskatoon. And was nearly blown away.

If Edmonton is showing signs of a cool, new vibe, it’s in full flight in Saskatoon, which locals tell me has undergone a sea change. How much of a change?

Enough that I’d put my hotel, The James, up against any hotel I’ve stayed at in the world. And I can’t think of a single restaurant I’d rather dine at than Ayden Kitchen and Bar, where they turn out breathtakingly good food in a restaurant as cool as anything I’ve seen in Toronto or New York.

Chefs Dale MacKay and Nathan Guggenheimer, who’ve worked in some of Canada’s top restaurants, are known for their charcuterie and I sampled some great stuff, as well as a wonderful lemongrass and ginger sausage. But I was more taken with their “regular” dishes. The Mediterranean branzino I had was seared perfectly and served on a bed of seasoned corn. The chicken wings were dusted with Thai spices and dipped in clear Thai sauce that was a perfect balance of sweet and sour and spicy. The Butcher Burger comes with bone marrow, a fried egg (you can skip it) and arugula, plus garlic aioli. It’s outstanding.

Hmmm; I wonder if Sasktel Centre plans on expanding the number of seats in the future, in the slim chance the NHL decides to expand.

Really? I didn't know they had a club section, which is weird cause I've sat in those seats before. I don't think that is an excuse for refusing to improve the rest of the arena, though. New seats throughout would lower capacity, but it'd improve the gameday experience and give the place a much deserved facelift. The way it is now, the club seating in a sea of light blue plastic just looks cheap.

They don't really have anywhere else to put seats. They expanded for the World Juniors a few years ago and I'd be surprised if they have more than a handful of events each year that actually require the expanded space.

I would imagine that if they did anything they would upgrade the quality / look of the seats and expand the concourse out (20-30ft) around the entire building. Then they would be able to do proper private boxes and it would be bigger than the MTS Centre assuming the seats are the same width (which they likely wouldn't be) but 15,000 seats seems to work well with Winnipeg so, wouldn't be that much of a stretch. Just population wise and sponsorship.

Actually, prior to Winnipeg adding a few rows of seats this season Credit Union Centre was slightly larger.

I've said it before in other places, but if Saskatoon wants to seriously ever be considered for an NHL franchise, a plan needs to be put in place for a new arena. The second a team lands, they need a plan that can be executed in short order to start construction.

Because no team is ever playing in the Sasktel Centre long term. Ever.

But this city doesn't think like that.

Maybe in another 20-30 years if population growth keeps at the current levels then maybe the city should start thinking like that. But by then a new arena will be needed anyways....

Great pics, Echoes! Really enjoyed the mix of historic with new and green/people places!! Saskatoon can't be beat in summer.

Speaking of pics, I was driving down 4th Avenue (heading north) and you can see the tower crane for the Shangri la project looming above the trees in the distant...it would make a cool pic (hint...hint).

Roadway upgrades on Airport Drive. 4-lane north of 45th to airport. Also traffic lights are being installed at 45th and Airport. Finally the dreaded rush hour left turn will be MUCH better.

I do hope they install lights at Robin Crescent and Airport as well, and have advance arrows at 45th and Cynthia for left turns.
