One thing I find rather surprising about Brentwood is the lack of a community centre or decent park nearby.

Metrotown has Bonsor, Central Park and the Civic Square; Central Surrey has Holland Park and numerous small parks; and Downtown almost has too much park space. Brentwood has two cemeteries and a couple little parks buried in SFH neigbourhoods.

I find it rather odd that getting a good community centre and park built nearby isn't being discussed more.

I wonder what that big white structure in the first photo is. I sometimes see smoke or dust emerging from the top of it. Could it be crunching the blocks of concrete they are digging up?

Lots of activity (and noise) at this site this morning. Was a slow start but seems to really be ramping up now. Looks like they have closed the whole parking lot in front of the mall (and they closed the main entrance to the mall last week). From my vantage point it looks like the only parking near the front is the new lot in front of and to the northwest of the display centre. I can't see from my place, but I suspect the entrance at Halifax and Willingdon is closed as well.

Yes it is, you can no longer enter the mall from Halifax.

It is taken from the Matcon website.. given that there is nothing fixed that tall in the area and it is too low for a helicopter, I think it would be a fair assumption that they use a quadrocopter with a camera attached.

It seems strange that they have some businesses still operating in the part of the mall that juts out near the construction zone. When you look at the picture I took, it just seems like they are in the way and it would be so much easier to just demolish that whole section. Could they have that as a plan but are just delaying moving the bank and McDonald's? They are really just in an island surrounded by closed off mall and construction.

Anyway, as I said, they are really moving now. Every night when I get home you can see more progress. Looks like the ramp to the Skytrain is the next to go.

hopefully the tenants can hang in there while the construction goes on, this construction and parking/access issues can only be making that mall deader than ever

Yes it is, especially Sears. Really dead in there. I've gotta think that Shape (the developer) has to be giving discounted rent these days to keep the tenants hanging in. Again, especially Sears. Would be disastrous to have your anchor tenant pull up stakes at the beginning of a major development like this.

No they wont.

Sears is likely paying peanuts in the first place so I doubt they are receiving rent abatement, however if other tenants can prove material traffic/sales decreases due to the work then they may be entitled to certain abatement measures.

yeah, i used to work across the street from that mall, sears was quite dead, zellers was dead, the only busy places seemed to be london drugs, mcdonalds and the food court

if i knew i had to go to sears i would always choose that one just because it was easy to look around and get what i wanted without any waiting
