I wholeheartedly agree. It's time for us to detach ourselves from outdated FRA thinking and align with the rest of the world. Even if this includes the need for PTC/ATP, this would be a huge step forwards.

What are these service improvements? I haven't heard of them.

^ You haven't? That's surprising given how often it has been discussed on here...

The O-Train is getting a new fleet of trains, and service frequency is being doubled to every 8 minutes, from 15 minutes today. This is happening sometime this year, tentatively in September.

Oh okay, I thought that had already been implemented and this was some new expansion I hadn't heard of before. How are they going to fit 8 minute frequencies without double-tracking, or is that what they're doing now?

They've added 2 passing tracks, like the other one that already existed at Carleton.

o-train problems today
OC Transpo @OC_Transpo · 10h
O-Train not operating Carleton to Bayview route 107 is running every 15 minutes between Carleton and Bayview.Det: http://goo.gl/JIWdX

Citizen said it was signals. Not sure why they need signals, there are only 2 trains, just tell the driver "don't leave Carleton until the other train pulls in"

That's all well and dandy until the other train is late and you don't know where it is, and you're not sure whether or not you can proceed without causing a death-inducing collision.

No signals is just asking for a fatal accident.

Amazingly, they have these things called "radios" in the cabs of the trains, the operators use them to check in every time before they leave the termini to start their run.

I'm not arguing that should run without signals, but they do have a very easy way of knowing where the other train is.

If it is late they can't leave carleton anyway (there is only one track). I understand that when the system gets more complicated with additional trains and passing locations they need signals, but for the time being, SOP is wait at Carleton until the other train shows up, which they have to do whether there are signals or not.

There may not be signals required between the two O-trains that putter back and forther, but the north-south track crosses the VIA rail and Walkley road tracks, so there must be some kind of signalling there.l

This is where I have noticed most of the problems over the past year, at the Ellwood Diamond Interlocking (Interlocking signals are used when trains cross each other, to prevent conflicting movements).

The issue with the O-Train is that there is only one driver. With normal trains, there are two people in the cab, as a fail safe should one become incapacitated. With the O-Train, the fail safe is the mechanical Indusi system, which will stop the train should it pass a signal at danger. This means the driver must override the system to pass a signal at red, which does happen sometimes. It's easy to tell, because you can see the driver filling out paperwork before crossing the diamond on a red signal.

Telling the drivers to pass at Carleton without signals could become disastrous should a mistake be made by the driver, as the trails would be on a collision course, likely either the river or in the tunnel. As far fetched of an idea it may seem for a driver to take off without the other train arriving first, stranger things have happened.

O-Train derails at Carleton

By Jon Willing ,Ottawa Sun
First posted: Monday, August 11, 2014 05:20 PM EDT | Updated: Monday, August 11, 2014 05:22 PM EDT

An O-Train carrying passengers went off the track Monday afternoon at Carleton University.

One minor injury was reported.

The train's wheel sets were not fully aligned on the track when it entered the university around 3:30 p.m., OC Transpo said.

Transpo is investigating.

The O-Train is temporarily out of service. A replacement Route 107 is running until the train is put back in service.

Sounds like the O-Train expansion plan just went off the rails.

Tip your waiter.

Based purely on the various photos, it looks like a problem with the switch at the south end of the station.

I don't know specifics about the (possibly unrelated) signalling problems prior to the accident but trains were definitely not running on schedule immediately before the derailment. I saw a single trainset sitting for several minutes at Carleton before departing southbound -- this was at around 2:40-2:45 pm.

O-Train service has short delays Wednesday; derailment still under investigation

Samantha Wright Allen, Ottawa Citizen
Published on: August 13, 2014, Last Updated: August 13, 2014 7:33 AM EDT

O-Train service was running with 10-minute delays Wednesday morning, OC Transpo tweeted.

The cause of Monday’s O-Train derailment near Carleton University remained unknown, even as full service resumed at about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday.

A northbound O-Train derailed near the university’s station.

A city spokesperson said on Tuesday that it would be “premature” to discuss possible causes of the derailment, because the cause remained under investigation. It was unclear how long the investigation will take.

Transit staff worked through Monday night and early Tuesday to re-rail the train, move it to Walkley Yard and conduct inspections and repairs to the track, the city’s manager of transit operations Troy Charter said via email.

Service resumed after the city’s rail maintenance contractor inspected the repairs to ensure trains could run safely, Charter said.

On Monday, paramedics confirmed they responded just before 3:30 p.m. to an incident near Carleton University’s O-Train stop. OC Transpo alerted commuters via Twitter that O-Train service was being replaced by Route 107, running every 15 minutes between Greenboro and Bayview stations.

When the train was evacuated after the derailment, a woman in her 50s requested assistance because she was suffering from a sore neck and back. She was taken to hospital as a precaution, paramedics said. No other injuries were reported.

It has been more than a decade since any O-Train derailed. In July 2003, a train at Walkley Yard that wasn’t in service at the time had one of its eight sets of wheels derail from the track, Charter said.
