Randomly bumped into a small project in Santa Monica

http://www.smmirror.com/articles/News/MI...ta-Monica-City-Council-Green-Light/40603

Quote:

MINI Dealership In Line For Santa Monica City Council Green Light

A new car dealership could soon zig and zag its way to the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and 14th Street. The proposed dealership has already handled a few tough corners en route to the City Council, but before MINI crosses the finish line and opens up shop in Santa Monica, the group proposing the auto company’s arrival must still win over the City Council.

The council is expected to vote on the project’s development agreement (DA) at tonight’s July 8 meeting, with council members to weigh in on a MINI dealership proposing to bring a 33,400 square foot and 35-foot high building to 1402 Santa Monica Boulevard.

The current DA proposed by Quinn Automotive Group includes plans for 6,144 square feet of sales floor and offices, a café, 21 service bays, and 135 parking spaces. If approved, the MINI dealership would replace a Union 76 service station that has since been closed down.

I'm amazed at the speed and extent to which Southeast Asian corporations are changing the urban landscape of Los Angeles. This is a good thing and I can imagine that this kind of investing will really pick up in the coming decade.

I think this is the Target building in Hollywood. Crappy photo because of the sun.

Sunset Gordon. What do you guys think of the change of design with the "new" Old Spaghetti Factory building incorporated?

Has anyone noticed a work-stoppage at the Hollywood Target? I heard a rumor that the NIMBYs were successful in their lawsuit against it. Hope not.

Per the LA Superior Court website, a final order was entered in the CEQA case about 2 weeks ago. No freely available source says which way it went.

Long Beach

Well some news from Long Beach, since the Long Beach thread is seriously dead and void at this point, the proposed 18 and 31 floor towers on the eastern edge of downtown have finally broken ground, or atleast the 18 floor one has broken ground since the taller one wont start for another 2 years I believe. Drove past this morning and they were doing foundation work and digging down, wish I knew how to post pictures on here

I haven't seen much here on developments in the SGV, so here's one from El Monte - the Flair Spectrum El Monte project (14.66 acres, 500k sq ft retail (or 400k retail + 100k office), 50k sq ft restaurant, two 18 story residential buildings with total 600 units, 5-8 story parking structure, 11 story hotel with 220 rooms. Initial Study here.

And over in Irwindale, a plan to turn the Speedway into a big mall. Initial Study here.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the metropolis, the Millenium Towers seismic study says no active faults on site, some inactive faults (which do not carry regulatory consequences) across the street. Times reports here.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this before, but a LADOT and LADCP released released a bunch of proposals in the West LA and Coastal corridors as part of the Westside Mobility Plan a couple months ago. http://www.westsidemobilityplan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Meeting-Boards.pdf; http://www.westsidemobilityplan.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Handouts.pdf.

Some highlights:
- Curb running BRT on Santa Monica
- Center running BRT on Sepulveda and Lincoln, with the possibility of future upgrades to LRT.
- Metro 733 enhancements on Venice, with the possibility of a future streetcar line.
- Cycle Tracks on Santa Monica and Venice
- Various rapid and local bus improvements; new circulator buses; road improvements.

The Millenium Hollywood fault study, if the Department of Public Safety accepts it, is probably the biggest piece of news on the forum at the moment. That project will be the single largest skyline changer for Hollywood, and a huge boon to the area.

Yeah, that's huge, although I imagine it can still get NIMBY challenged in court?

And a big yes to all this stuff too:

Yeah, and needs to get past California Geological Survey (or whoever finalizes the earthquake zone maps) as well. I'm not a lawyer, but I suspect that a CEQA suit would stand a good chance of at least forcing them to redo the EIR at this point - these studies should probably have been done before the EIR was certified.

As much as I'd love to see more highrises along Hollywood Blvd, I'll be a little sad to see the old Fifth Church of Christ Scientist bite the dust. It was unsympathetically renovated by the MOSAIC Church, but it was once a very nice mid-century building.

Yeesh...no kidding. The word "renovated," is too kind for this:

They butchered that place. Shame.

Drove by Target on Sunset and it doesn't seem like there are any workers around (could all be at lunch, tho)

Mosaic just can't seem to stay in one place. They bounced all over downtown, eventually settling at the Mayan for a few years, before (buying?) the Fifth Scientist church on La Brea. Will be interested to see where they go now, as they are one of the more prominent 20-45 demo churches in LA, and HillsongLA has already established itself at the Belasco.
