Regarding that Calgary shot above, there's something really impressive about that sheer cliff of skyscrapers on the north side of the tracks.

Impressive, but annoys me that it drops into surface paling lots. An unfortunate gulf alongside the CP Rail tracks hopefully soon to fill in.

All I can say about that Calgary image is anyone who wasn't sure about Eighth Avenue Place when the designs came out is: FOR SHAME. They are awesome.

I love the contrast!

It's a very cool contrast. Even with all of the towers coming to Tenth Avenue (a few under way, several starting this year) it will always be a bit of a cliff. All of the new towers on the south side are in the 100 - 130 meter range, compared to the 190 - 215 meter range that is north of the tracks.

^Until someone builds the supertall that straddles the tracks.

I can dream.

That is why a park over the tracks would look Chicago style amazing.

Instead of taller towers, I think what we are more likely to see are a lot of shorter buildings of the Place 10 and Centre 10 variety, with a smattering of 30-40 storey towers on both sides of the tracks. And I would be fine with that, on an aesthetic level... I've always been more fond of the skyline from the south, with all the showpiece towers, than the view from the north.

Although speaking of the skyscraper wall, one lots that is screaming for redevelopment is the block between Bankers Hall and EAP, which has the HSBC building and the above-ground parkade. That would be an amazing spot for a single, tall signature tower (no twins, not enough space).

^The first pic clearly shows the immense potential the central station area has. Just imagine that horrid parking structure on la gauchetiere gone....and replaced with a worthy skyscraper. Perhaps even the city's next tallest?

Nah, pipe dream.

It's just screaming out to be a park. Burying the tracks below grade and appropriating one block south of the tracks would make for an even better park. Hello 'Central Park' Calgary style?

At one time Brookfield planned to replace the above ground parkade with a Bankers Court scale tower.

^In the 80's a 75 storey tower was planned for that lot.

What a chance it is for Montréal to have Mount-Royal next to Downtown. I know very few cities with that natural setting.
I'm still thinking of another important North-American city like that and I don't find it.

Mount Royal is great, but sometimes I think it would've been cooler if it had been built up as an "upper town" like Quebec City's.
