I didn't know that either. I'm generally a fan but it's not really one of his stronger efforts.

Pei designed it as a three building complex but the developer had financial issues that delayed then killed the second and third buildings.

I guess I don't mind the new paint job all that much... though changing the name to the cheesy "City View" pretty much blows... not as cheesy as something like "City Vue", but still says trying too hard.

I lived in an apartment there with my cousin and one of her friends for a summer during college. The friend partied hard 5 nights a week and had D-cups and was slutty -- it was awesome.

Uptown has two starchitect buildings. I.M. Pei's Washington Plaza and Mies van der Roes hall of science building at Duquesne Univ.

I second that! It's Galleria at Market East meets Pikes Place Market. I also like how 18th and 19th street cut-throughs are entirely pedestrian-oriented. This is how I'd like to see the Produce Terminal reused.

Pfaffman came through, that looks truly awesome! I am concerned about whether it is feasible though. Where are all these vendors going to come from?

I have the same concern. It would take lots of retail to fill that building, even with a couple large anchor tenants. Weren't the other two proposals retail-residential combinations? It seems a better bet, as it would prevent the project from being completely dependent on retail. And wouldn't Pfaffmann's all-retail concept require lots of parking?

It's a nice proposal for the Produce Terminal, but I would prefer a mixture also. The Pittsburgh Public market on 24th and Penn sometimes struggles to draw people. This was also the case when it was at the western end of the Produce Terminal, except on weekends. I would prefer a mixture of residential and retail if not strictly residential. These would be coveting flats in which to to live being so close to the shops on Penn and the token ones across the way on Smallman. The Downtown area needs residential. The Strip's retail scene is fine. The proposal should allow for a few retail or restaurant spaces in the terminal to help the street scene. The residents will help support these places along with visitors to the Strip. I say 80% residential, with lofts built on a second floor, and 20% restaurant/retail. Strictly retail would be a big risk. Residential would more of a sure thing one would think given the state of the Pittsburgh housing scene. I think I may go to the meeting at the Heinz History Center to learn more, not to shoot it down like some will do.

Yes, I agree that mixed use is usually a safer bet. That way if one sector it's not doing well the development is not a ghost town

I agree with the consensus that residential should be maximized. Retail follows rooftops as Peduto says.
