PCL CONSTRUCTION

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights has received a 2014 Global Best Project Award from Engineering-News Record.

Quote:

We were not merely constructing a building, but creating a work of architectural art that stands as a showpiece and testament to human rights.

“Its complex geometry is something that has rarely, if ever, been attempted before on this scale in Canada. As our valued construction partner, PCL could always be relied upon — through hard work and collaboration — to find the solutions that will see this building open its doors on September 20, 2014.”

Winning in the Cultural category, the CMHR is the first large-scale project in Canada to use 3-D modeling as part of a Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) approach across all consultant and contractor groups.

I have to say that I do like the building overall. The interior is magnificent and I find it's most interesting side is from the Provencher Bridge with it's steps and levels of stone and the southern side of the glazing visible. What bugs me is the darker blue glass at the base of the tower. I just can't seem to like it. In some ways it reduces my overall opinion of what I feel is a great building.

Either way great pictures.

Like the design or hate it, I think it's safe to say that it'll be a symbol for Winnipeg for the forseeable future.

The last time a building that audacious went up in Winnipeg was the Legislative Building... 100 years ago.

Cheswick -This is always going to be the case in any architecturally unique or first of it's kind stucture in design/ or construction.

Museum's creator prepared for the bricks and bouquets

Predock came to Winnipeg this week to accept an honorary fellowship from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, which is holding its festival of architecture this week in Winnipeg. Symbolically, however, this marks the last intimate moment Predock will have with his creation.

He will most likely be in attendance when the building and its galleries are finally, mercifully opened to the public. But by then, he will be sharing it with the world and dealing with the inevitable fallout.

In an interview, Predock said he fully expects a wide array of reactions, positive and negative. And that's OK.

I had the opportunity to visit the CMHR this week and was given a short impromptu tour. Its very nice.

The one thing I was surprised about was entering the main entrance, I sort of expected to see a huge lobby with views up to the top. Seeing it from the outside, you expect to see a cavernous interior but it wasnt like that at all.

We were takent up to the observation area which I guess was the base of the tower (it had 360 degree windows and I snapped a few pics and video. Beautiful view. Ran into Stuart Murray on the way out and he jokingly asked us if it would be open on time and then asked us what we thought of the place.

Looking forward to it opening!

I've heard rumours that only 50% of the exhibits will be open. That would be a shame. One chance to make a first impression. They should have waited until spring to open and put a best foot forward.

Unfortunate if it holds up to be true. The optics of this type of news does not help a museum opening under so much criticism to begin with.

Just shows the folly of publicly pushing an official opening date long before you know it's feasible. We've waited this long, they might as well eat a little crow and delay another 6 months until it's completely ready.

What do you tell the national and international media members that show up? "It may not be that great right now, but come back in February and it'll be awesome!"
